I'm surprised they didn't offer Mag ride with the base model.
Mag ride is one of the reasons I'm ordering Z51 (ediff and the larger wheels are the other).
Maybe someday GM will offer mag ride to everyone but they probably want to push the average MSRP up a bit and make people go Z51.

The focal point of the new stingray is the integration of various packages...
I believe as an owner of two z51 corvettes and one z06 that the z51 package is optimized with the MRC option.
I'm as tight with how I spend my money as the next guy yet I see these two options along with NPP exhaust as fundamental options as an enthusiast to get the most enjoyment out of the new corvette c7 for many many years of use.
I believe these three options will be sought out options for years to come. I believe the added expense will add to owners enjoyment for those who drive only on the street as much as for those who track their cars.
Totaled up....its 2800 for z51, 1800 for MRC and 1200 for NPP...under 6 grand or just over 10 percent of the base price...
Best money spent on a sports car respected for its capabilities.

So it seems very far from "pointless" to me.

Would it be more fun to own a Z51+MRC vette....sure, but will I use the options enough to make it worth the upgraded cost.....not likely. I owned a C6 Z51 and a C6 Z06, the car i missed most was the C6 Z51 despite it being way down on HP or handling limits.....personally I drive only on the street and the Z06 was way overkill in the end.
I'll be opting for a base Stingray this time, most important are the updates to the car styling and interior, 455hp is plenty for me these days. Doubt the Z51 or MRC will matter much when I'm just cruising around with the targa off

I dunno, based on videos we've seen, it sounds amazing... And the in-dash controls you get from a factory dual-mode exhaust is pretty sweet, too. An extra 5 hp is nothing to write home about, but it's more than zero hp, at least.
So it seems very far from "pointless" to me.

There are some pointless options for the C7, but NOT the NPP! IMO
It's another must have fun part for this C7 Toy for me.

Having NPP on my c6 z51 has been a joy. The duality of the vehicle from quiet when I need it to be and loud when I want it to be has been more satisfying than when I had a corsa indy on my c5 z51...
I recommend that the NPP will be a worthwhile 1200 dollars spent for those on the fence..of whether to buy it or not..when ordering..
I believe the Z51 MRC option will of the same consideration an worth while as well for the same reasons..
