Default NEED HELP!!! C4 1984 Corvette

Hey guys so I really have no idea about corvettes, other than that I know I like them a lot!

So my first car is in a bad place right now... it may be not worth my money to fix (I'm going to get it checked out next week). Its a 98 Neon, and it has some electrical problems (the dash lights as well as the spedometer and odometer dont work).

Anyway, so I am currently looking at new cars if my old one isn't fixable. So naturally I go to craigslist. I am not even sure of my budget yet, but I'm sure I could sell my old car for parts for $1000, and I've got some money saved.

I found this beautiful 84 vette... 86k+ miles, and it just needs a muffler and AC all for $4k or less... good deal or not? Will I end up paying a bunch more? Will it be reliable?

Here is the link... http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/cto/2497678050.html

Let me know what you think. And obviously without a test ride and actually seeing the car in person, I won't know exactly what is what.

Welcome to the Forum!

As noted above, you'll get more responses in the C4 section of Corvette Forum.

As a start I suggest familarizing yourself with Corvettes in general and C4's in particular (1984-1996). A good place to start is the Corvette Black Book:

http://www.corvetteblackbook.com/blackbook.html

There are also several Corvette Buyers Guides that list the pros and cons of various models and years. From my perspective, the later C4s (LT1 engine - 1992-96) are more desireable with the 1996 being the best. The 1984 uses the same "Cross-Fire" throttle body fuel injection as the 1982 and later C4s used more advanced FI.

Don't be in a hurry buying a used Corvette - look around a LOT - and educate yourself before you buy. Also, the oldest of these cars is approaching 30 years old and they require more mechanical attention than newer models. How able are you (or how willing are you to learn) to work on your car? Plan on spending $$$ if you don't do your own work (part of the fun of owning one).

Again, welcome to the Forum!

84 is not a bad car if you can find someone to work on the crossfire injection, if you cant', leave that car for someone else.. Not the car for the inexperienced with Vette dollars..

Avoid the 1984 corvette- That cross fire injection was terrible.

If you like the c4 body style, I would go for at least a 1990 with the L98 tuned port injection for the following reasons.
the Dashboard on the pre-1990s are problematic.
Most of the kinks of the earlier year c4's had been worked out.
I like the 1990 concave rear bumper better then the 1991 through 96 convex bumper.
you should be able to get a 1990 for near what the 1984 asking price is.

Good luck and enjoy your first corvette experience.
