Default I'll throw this out there

I'm really thinking the C7 will not have a removable top. This may have been posted before, but since the 68 original T-tops, a removable Corvette top has been available. I really think that the new C7 will be a stationary hard top and convertible only. Any thoughts?

I'm not a fan of that idea. I'm not sure it would completely prevent me from buying one, but it would be a mark in the Cons column.

If they can resolve the structure ridgidity issues with using an aluminum frame and not have the roof, they'll certainly do it. I am certain GM really wants to move the entire line to aluminum frames for weight savings, so I can't imagine they won't work very hard to solve the problem.

I would agree it could be an only non removable "hard top" coupe and a convertible. I do not really see a problem with this and it may help with rigidity.

They have to build a convertible, so the structural rigidity is there for a targa. I don't know what their customer research tells them, but the targa-hatchback configuration is a big deal for me; if C7 lost either, it would certainly stall my purchase decision, and I'd be much more tempted to leave the flock.

I could see styling making a targa difficult, though. And GM is probably disinclined to offer three styles.

I have absolutely no idea why they would do that.

Part of the appeal of the corvette is that it can do so many things without much compromise.

Want to track it? Done
Want to take the top off? Done
Want to carry two golf bags easily? Done
Want to do 0-60 in 4 sec? Done
Want to get nearly 30 mpg on the highway? Done
Want a comfortable sportscar even if you're tall and/or fat? Done

Start taking some of those things away to make it a tad bit faster around a track and it starts to lose some appeal for a lot of people.

Plus it doesn't make a lot of sense because they already do that for the track version of the car, the Z06.

GM stated at the release of the C6Z06 that they would have to increase the weight of the car in order to make the top removable. The fixed magnesium roof saves weight, that's the reason they did it that way.

The aluminum frame can be combined with a removal top without difficulty, that's all I'm saying, so if they fix the top, that's not the reason.
