REAL Synthetic Oils?
Probably been talked about a million times, but I need to know now before I buy (for a car I just bought). I know Amsoil & Royal Purple are supposedly REAL & really good 100% synthetic oils, but any others? Lucas?
Thanks, -Eric

OP, do a search.
There has been a lengthy and in one case, a very good technical discussion on the forum about group IV and group V synthetics.
All you'd ever want to know, and then some.

All synthetics in testing work about the same. It is more about the individual company, their process and their additives.
In gear oil testing Amsoil rates at the top. Mobil 1 comes in second. Lucas comes in down the list, Royal Purple rates lower than Castrol non-synthetic gear oil.
If you don't trust the Mobil 1 that came with the car, use Amsoil anything else is either not as good or you will pay more for the same protection.

Over here in USA, Grp III base oils are allowed to be marketed as Synthetic when in reality they come from crude oil that has been refined, dewaxed and hydro-something-or-other-ed. Some manufactures using grp IV and Grp V base oils started using the words fully synthetic to give them partial differentiation.
For most practical purposes the lubricating properties of a good grp III base oil is immesurably different than a proper grp IV or grp V base oil.
With that said: also not that a good many properties of the oil you want to use as in the additive package which is for many practical purposes completely opaque to consumer analysis.

And I'd add that unless you're doing some hard-core racing or subjecting your engine to other extreme conditions, the factory fill synthetic Mobil 1 is all you need.

To me, the main advantage of synthetic oil is the extended interval between required changes. I can be too practical about things, sometimes, I admit. But, on the other hand it costs three times as much at each change. Can't win, I guess.

Off the shelf true synthetic Mobil 1 products (non-Group III) are of the 0w weights.
I prefer German Castrol. AutoZone is the only carrier of it in the U.S. that I know of. They also include it in their Syntec sales promotions.

New Corvettes roll out of Bowling Green with a synthetic blend oil that meets GM's dexos spec.
From the 2012 Corvette owners manual....
"Engine Oil
Use only engine oil licensed to the dexos1 specfication, or equivalent,
of the proper SAE viscosity grade. ACDelco dexos1 Synthetic Blend is
recommended. See Engine Oil on page 10‑14."

Since I do not race my Corvette, all I need to know is that EVERY Porsche, Ferrari and every Corvette come from the factory filled with Mobil 1.
Good enough for me.

Factory fill for 1990's Ferraris was Shell Helix Ultra
And while I can't remember what the current Ferrari factory fill is, it is not Mobil 1. {With no disrespect implied or intended towards Mobil or Mobil One.}

Mobil 1 is the factory fill for Corvette, Porsche, Mercedes/McClaren, and the Acura and Lexus sports cars.
Re Bob's site, the co-ownerships and brandings make it tough to compare oils in Europe and North America. One example is that Rolls Royce and Bentley at one time recommended different brands (Castrol and Mobil 1) for the same engine. The business relationship probably explains that.
