Default iPhone/iPod plug up...

I had a dream that the C7 Corvette went the route that Mercedes went with the iPod/iPhone hook up. Mercedes uses the iPhone charger port to play the music through the radio and you can control it through the radio. I like this way better than my 2009 C6 which we all know through the AUX and control songs on the iPhone/iPod. Which this dream turned out to be a nightmare because the iPhone 5 charger port is different from the iPhone 4 (and earlier version). I can not use my iPhone in the 2012 ML550 or any other Mercedes I assume (I believe it's a 2012 ML might be 2011 but still). Hopefully Chevrolet will not be this stupid to have just the old or the new port to hook up with. Has this been talked about? In no way will this stop me from buying the car (I will just buy an old iPod and leave it in the car) but just food for thought....

WTF should GM care what connector Apple uses this year... it's sure to change again to get their legions of fans to buy a "new" device cause something is changed.

The plug at the end of the cable that goes into the radio is still the USB standard, not Apples.

My buddy just got a Toyota Tundra (shame on him) and it automatically picks up his music on his stereo via bluetooth. No plugs, he just gets it and it syncs up and plays songs/picks up calls, etc. Now if I could control the song selection, volume, etc. using the steering wheel controls...

My daily commute car is a Volt (I know, but appliances have their place too) and it has the best of all worlds. It has Bluetooth that both picks up and controls the iPhone when it's in my pocket. The touchscreen in the center stack can control the music and even pulls the album artwork. (I never tried from the steering wheel.) The hands-free calling and voice recognition also works off the phone's contacts and is better-integrated than I've seen on other GM cars. If they have this all on a Volt, I can't imagine not putting it in the new Vette.

Kevin93, that sounds slick. How is it scrolling through your library of songs to find the one you want?

If you're going to make a comment like that. Atleast be informed:

1) Apple has changed the iPod connector once in the history of its existence.

2) Apple has changed from the 30-pin connector TEN (10) years after the original connector was introduced.

3) Apple has changed the connector on all of its iOS devices (iPod, iPhone, iPad) to the new Lightning connector. It is expected to be used for the next TEN (10) years.

4) Apple has provided an adapter for those who wish to use older legacy devices with the newer connector.

5) I just purchased 2 extra Lightning-to-USB generic cables from Amazon for a whopping $2.56 a piece. If you cant afford a $2 cable.. then you should not be buying a brand new $600 iPhone.

Technology moves forward. You either jump on board or stay stuck in the past. The one area I do agree with you, is that no matter what the connector is for the phone.. all devices that connect to it should support the USB port solution. Its a standard interface that pretty much every manufacter does & should continue to support.

Does every computer still have RS-232 serial port? That was the standard as well. Should it be USB 2 or 3.0? They have different numbers of pins. Which size port standard, mini, or micro?

Technology moves on, even the USB port won't last forever.

Really not a problem if you looked on Apples web site, Or at least did a Google search. The main point from the original post has a valid point, It would be nice to have better integration of devices in the new C7. Which i think will happen, As i think Bluetooth or something similar would be better than trying to keep up with the current most popular cable used right now.

Not talking strictly the connector. iPad mini is going to have retina display less than 6 months after its initial release. Etc and the list goes on and on. I'm not listing them all and am far from uninformed.

I own an iPhone and think its a pretty slick device bit
It has a lot of downsides (but all devices do I guess)

I just find it funny that someone thinks GM should change their connector from an industry standard when really the end on apples cable is what changed and it shouldn't affect the other end whatsoever.

I agree and that was my point. GM supplies the industry standard USB or BT integration. Done.

My cobalt works just fine with my iPhone through the cable. I can't imagine the new vette won't

USB 3.0 and 2.0 are compatible technologies. If you plug in a 3.0 device into a 2.0 port, the unit will just down convert to the 2.0 speed. USB 3.0 ports are backwards compatible with 2.0 devices. The USB port isn't going anywhere anytime soon with the recent introduction of the 3.0 standard.

And for those asking for lightning ports, mini/micro USB ports, I do not get the logic. In what application are you going to use these ports? Sure, your device may have a micro or mini USB port (or a Apple 30 pin or lightning port), but what is the port on the other side of that cable? Just a plain old USB port. There's a reason why that's the standard.

And while Bluetooth is very convenient and an improving technology, I still prefer to listen to my music via a cable connection. Not just for the ability to charge, but because I can tell a noticeable difference in lack of sound quality with the compressed bluetooth signal. It is getting better though.

I agree the connector on the Apple Device may be different the end that plugs into the USB port is still the same connector. So all the car needs is a standard USB port and a system that will allow the device to connect and interface with the car stereo.

We have a new 4runner and whether I have the iphone in the glove box connect via USB or have it out connected via Bluetooth the steering wheel controls or the dash unit controls the iphone great! The only thing I don't like with the bluetooth is that when the phone rings no matter what I do (change the ring tone to silent etc etc) through all of the speakers at the level I have my music.

It is not that simple. The in car device has to support control from an Apple device and the IOS level. Otherwise certain things don't work. So now you have to update your radio.. sorry soud system to work with your device. Also it might work one way through USB and another through bluetooth. There is nothing simple about it.

You should hope that the communbication from the actual car control systems (the ones that make it go, stop, shift etc) really only go one way or at least do depend on the in car interfaces to be funtional in order to go. Have you ever had a blue screen of death, or an app hang? When was the last time your dash or HUD do that?

Everybody was configurable this and that. That forget how reliable these really flexible mobile devices are. If you can upload programs, you can upload viruses.
