That's an estimate from Car and Driver. If you watch the whole video they have a couple of points that seem to be inaccurate that they post while the video is running.

i know from experience that a full body c5, fully stripped, with lexan for glass, no interior, 80 lbs worth of cage and probably 20 pounds worth of race extras, and a cf hood weighs in at 2470. So figure 2370 for a running, driving, full body shell c5 without the cage.
the c6 glass is 71 lbs total, altogether. the c6z frame is 136 pounds less. the c6z CF fenders save 26 pounds. the wipers, horn, and cats amount to less than 30 pounds. Thus a full bodied, fully running, driving, glassed c6 aluminum framed car is going to weigh in right at 2310. It would certainly be a race car only at that weight, but it would pass inspection, have 2 seats, and be street legal. 80 or so pounds is the gas for 'curb weight.' the other 900+ pounds is all just sound deadening, comfort items, and body electronics and electrical.
it appears from what i've read and seen that the c7 carries similar weights in chassis, suspension, and drivetrain as the c6. probably 10-15 more for the 7 speed, probably 10-15 more for the brakes. probably some extra weight for the mistake of making it longer (i'd say wider too but it is no wider than a c6z06. air conditioning carries a total weight of less than 40 pounds. the stereo less than 20 pounds. so figure a street legal, full bodied and fully glassed, air conditioned vette with a stereo, but with only race seats for an interior, would weigh around 2450, probably plus or minus 20 pounds or less.
So the question for chevrolet is, does a sportscar really need 900 pounds of comfort and quietness frill? Couldn't we get by with 400? I can put a lot of NVH padding, carpet, and leather in a car for 400 pounds. i know the airbags are close to 25. i know some padding is required, etc., but still, 900 pounds? inquiring minds want to know.

The base is 3350 buddy. The higher ends will loose the weight. Can't say that about most vette drivers though.
