Obviously this is a big event in the history of the car being only the 6th time. It's my first that I payed any attention to. I bought a c5 in 2008 and have moved on to a c6 now. I wasn't tuned into this forum or the vette world before that. I'm finding the legions of threads with such heated bickering about the new styling to be surprising. To the extent of members being hostile and nasty with each other.
It really makes me wonder how the c6 was received and what the common complaints were at that time. I ask because to me the c6 wide body really embodies the corvette. It's got such a great balance of tradition and tasteful modern styling. If the wide body had been around in 2005 I just can't possibly see what folks could have complained about, yet, since 1/13 it has become very obvious that that would be silly to think.
All you c7 lovers, what sucked about the c6 at the time whether you personally thought so or not?

There was all kinds of complaining from the headlights, to the rear end, to the steering wheel, etc. I remember one comment about the front looking like a large mouth bass....
There will always be complainers, but GM listened to us as customer and gave us what we wanted in terms of creature comforts, track packages, etc. There is a ton of new stuff to come too!
Can you imagine what it would have been like had there been online Corvette forums (or any) “back in the day” when the C-3 replaced the C-2? I believe it would have recreated the "Holy Wars" with forum moderators pulling their hair out, and threads being deleted wholesale.
There were and there always will be negative comments when ever the Corvette has a redesign. Just wait 8-10 years and see what happens when the C8 hits the street.
What would be really nice if all the name calling stopped. I cannot stand the phase "Haters". Why can't members simply accept the comments of others and leave it like that, or if they must comment back make it civil.
I was not overly joyed with the C7 when I first saw it, but it only took a few days and I think it is going to be a great new generation. But for those that don't care for it, fine it is their choice.
OK, here are a couple of photos... the first one is how I viewed my car last Sunday morning, the other is how I viewed it Monday morning!
I still love my C6. I would not turn down a C7 however. But the real point of this post is the difference (if any) from when the C6 was released compared to the C7 release as far as comments pro & con.

The exact same thing happened when the C6 was introduced. Literally the exact same thing.
Lots of people who hated GM's design decisions (fixed headlights! OMG! They ruined the car!)
People telling the "C6 bashers" to give it a rest and get their own forum.
Now, 9 years later, it's the same damn thing. Except now many people are whining about the C7's back end design, whereas in 2004 everybody was moaning about the C6's front end design.
In fact, here's a gripe list copy/pasted from one of the threads 9 years ago. Go down the list, make a few tweaks, and it's almost the exact same stuff we're seeing now.
- The first 10,000 units sold make a great "guinea pig" experiment. Problems will show up with early Vettes that didn't show up in mules (Look at the C5 with the column lock recall issue, rocking seats, leaking batteries, faulty fuel guages, etc.) The great thing for GM is that Corvette enthusiasts will even pay for the privilege of being guinea pigs!
- GM really dropped the ball on the front-end design. Hidden headlights (not necessarily pop-ups) should have been incorporated into the design. Something is wrong with the front-end, especially the grill area - almost everyone says so. I would like to give the aftermarket 2 to 4 years to come up with some solutions to improve the front-end appearance. I honestly cannot believe all of those in charge at GM let the C6 go into production with the front-end looking like that. First-year automotive design students could tell you something's not right.
- The aftermarket suppliers will also come up with some solutions for the offcenter Corvette nametag on back, the grey plastic center light/spoiler thing, the so-called diffuser, and dorsal fin antenna I keep hearing about.
- Runflats on the C5 were a big joke. I love my GS-D3s. Hopefully Goodyear will make some GS-D3s for the C6.
- 400 horsepower is a joke! How do you like the fact that your neighbor's German sedan or pick-up truck has equal or more horsepower?
- With only 400 horsepower the C6 is a perfect candidate for a supercharger. Magnusson and Motor City Hoods will need at least a year or two to adapt the intercooled supercharger system and design a new hood for the C6.
- I would like to see what the Z06 will offer. Hopefully it will be available in the coupe, otherwise I will not buy one.
- The rumored aluminum frame should have been finished in time for the C6. Other car companies utilize an aluminum frame but GM can't (or won't) get it done. I'm hoping an aluminum frame will be introduced for the Z06.
- I'm waiting to see what the "Supervette" or "Blue Devil" is all about. It may be worth it to pay $100,000 for a supercar Corvette.

You cant satisfy everyone. There will always be aspects of the car that individuals dont particularly care for. Its impossible to satisfy everyone completely. But overall I think so far GM has gotten the C7 right. I still cant say whether or not I like the interior until I sit in it but thats really the only part of the car that I will reserve comment on thus far.
So with all the complainers how did the sales numbers of the C6 stack up with the C5? From looking back on history it appears the C6 didnt sell as well as the C5. 2011 didnt even break 20,000 cars sold. Looks like the C5 stayed in the 30,000 cars per year throughout the generation. If people complained about how drastic the C6 was over the C5 and it effected the numbers by that much then I cant imagine whats gonna happen with the C7 when in every poll only 40% of the people vote that they love the car with everybody else on the fence about it.
Looking back this release has much more complaining then I remember with the C6..
The 2005 C-5 Corvette was on TV with the US Olympics at the time as a commercial promoting the car with a little boy driving it but somehow it got banned because it looked like a bad influence for kids to speed or something to that effect.

Start reading some of it in my link. Fun to look back and see the same sort of stuff, just the other end of the car. The funniest one is last post on that page... "There's no way I will ever buy a Corvette with fixed headlights" And now has his black '08 as an avatar
Use the --> Display Options--> showing threads option at the bottom of the C6 General Discusion and choose From the beginning. Around page 2638 and newer is where it starts getting fun. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-c...-corvette.html
