I know the back up camera is the law in 2014. What I would like to see, many new cars have them, is a blind spot warning light in the side view mirrors. Not even an option on my new C7 .
I guess my neck will have to stay in shape to move my eyes around the the car to change lanes..
I've posted in a few threads, the backup camera is not law in 2014. There are proposed regulations under review. It's highly unlikely that the review is completed and it takes effect in 2014. Probably 2015 or 16 if at all.
As far as blind spot warning systems, anyone that hasn't learned to properly adjust mirrors, really should research it. I can't begin to count how many people tell me they have properly adjusted mirrors, but can't see certain spots (the blind spots). When readjusting mirrors and showing them they can now see those spots, it opens up a whole new world. There are very few cars that have real blind spots in areas that matter (who cares if a bird is following you behind the C pillar) that can't be fixed by properly adjusted mirrors. This does not hold true for reverse though, as you are looking for different objects than a car in the next lane, or towing a trailer.
Properly adjusted mirrors are not natural for many people, as you will only see peices of the car in the next lane, rather than the whole thing, but a piece is all you need to know that it is there.
I still glance over the shoulder as well when changing lanes. Our Acadia has the blindspot warning system. Very useful driving home from the dealer's lot. Much less useful after the mirrors were properly adjusted.
Although probably heretical on here, I love Ford's aspherical mirrors on every rental I've had (travel a lot for work). Works great, no beeps or lights needed. Swapped out my GTI's side mirrors for euro versions with the aspherical edges with the same benefits. Proper mirror adjustment as above eliminates 99% of the blind spot issues (move out until you just can't see the side of your car, etc.). Not a big deal although it looks like rearward visibility out of the C7 is going to suck but won't know for sure until someone besides GM gets to daily drive the thing in traffic.

Thanks. I did not read your previous post on this subject.

And I agree that 'properly adjusted' mirrors eliminate most blind spots. However I do prefer the combination of mirror adjustments that allow for full side views together with a good Blind Spot Warning system. I think that is the best possible safety combo
I have the blind spot warning system on my Infiniti M and love it!
I have not driven my Vette since November, but remember it being especially difficult having the warning system on one car, and not the other!
I'm open minded on the rear camera. Can it be energized when the car is moving forward or only usable in reverse? I have only used it a little when i rented a large SUV, never had the chance to explore all the capabilities.

I think we've mixed the blind spot and the camera threads together. If it is like the other GM cars, the review camera is only powered while in reverse. You can use something like a Coastal Lockpick to enable it to work other times as well. I'm sure our forum vendors will come up with something, or the forum electronics gurus will give us the right wire to tap into to give it power other times as well.
Thank you for the video it was very informative. I have always driven with knowing who was around me. I use the mirrors to keep an eye on who is where. They call that defensive driving but it has always been part of my driving. The thing that worries me now is the change in driving courtesy and self centered me first idiots. I have been passing a slower car when "BOOM" some fool passes me on the right and squezze between my car and the car I am passing. Usually I see them coming..but not always. I would rather have blind to warning then a back up camera.. That is just not an option. I am ok with that. Just my opinion.
Unless GM does like the new Honda Accord, with its lane assist feature, BUT ONLY ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, and it works when you turn the right blinker on. you can see the cam on the mirror housing.
But as other states before me, you just need to adjust your mirrors and you'll have no blind spots. I adjust my mirrors to see the left and right lanes. by the time the other car is in your mirror, you already can see its front end with your own eyes.
Adjust your mirrors properly and/or turn your head. These lane assist & blind spot monitoring features are dumb & only make this lazy entitled nation even more lazy & entitled.
