C7 designer speaks
Liked the input, it is as good an explaination as there has been. You may not lilke the philosophy, but the C7 rear end did not get designed the way it looks to because Chevy raided the overstock parts bin, ala a shared corporate steering wheel on the '76 Vette.
The more I see the C7 rear the more I like it!

with that.But... IMO it got designed the way it looks because someone thought they were being cool-rad-hip.
Good thing the other 3/4 views are fantastic; or I would be looking at buying a slightly used C6GS 427 vert... instead of planning my C7 purchase.
Heck, the C7 appears to have the same basic steering wheel mold/pattern/shape as my 2013 Volt, just with a revised center section and controls!

He is clearly on the defensive, and adding more BS is not helping (aero tail lights - WTF?
) . Bottom line is that they flubbed the rear end - period. They ran out of ideas, money, and time, at about the same time.
Is any one surprised? This is the same guy who released the Azztec. He probably thought that was cool and he knew best back then too. It was only a matter of time before he screwed up another design.

I know you just can't accept it but they did this because they wanted to pull in other audiences. The controversy was known ahead of time.
I think I made it quite clear that i like the C7 and was not trying to make a bash post. I didn't see an article quoting this douche when he designed the C6 so that does not apply.
Folks, evolving is a good thing! Fashion changes, technology changes, food taste changes, home architecture changes.....I can go on forever.
If they didn't people would still be wearing their 70's jeans, using their brick size Motorola cell phones and food taste would be limited to things like meatloaf. There wouldn't be great things like the iphone (or other smart phones) or Sushi or really skimpy bikini's and so on.
Some can't accept change.....get over it!!! If you don't like it then don't buy it!

Your reasoning is flawed. If they ran out of ideas, money and time the easiest thing would have been to stay with round tail lights and a C6-style end to remove all whiff of controversy. Had they done that, you'd have been the first in line to say they didn't have any ideas.

So you are just ignorant of the kinds of things that a wide variety of car designers have said in many, many interviews? Just as you didn't know that the C5 was quite obviously designed by the same designer as the Pontiac Fiero...talk about copying. Who is the douche?
I just decided. You are.
Sure there is a small minority who doesn't like it but you can find that with every product.
One of the key things he did say was there were some real design limitations with he back end based on the functional elements that would not be compromised.
I can only assume that the venting, and the overall aerodynamic shape of the back end put them into a more challenging design path and overall aesthetic. Hence the new design vocabulary.
IMHO [I suspect] the back end was just not completely realized/finished from a design perspective and that upper management did not allow any additional time to work out the particulars with out form adversely effecting function.
