Chassis architecture
Take a close look at the C7 chassis that GM has hanging on the wall at the NY Auto Show. You can clearly see why Dave M in Corvette from the Inside labeled the C5 design as a 2-3-2 architecture. You can clearly see the center tube of the 3 part of the design. That rectangular tube is the strength and ties all the rest together.
Here's the wild part. Shorten the front 2 and lengthen the rear 2 and you have the basic architecture for a mid rear engined car! The 3 remains the same.
Actually, if the new 5.3lt V8 is a sideways mount with trans, you could just plop it in the C7 chassis as is behind the rear seats. Change the style a bit and reduce the $s on the interior and you have an entry level Corvette without a lot of engineering that could be built on the same production line.
