Just curious, am I the only one who thinks its a sad and stupid marking ploy to use the stingray name on a new corvette.
To me that was a name for the Mako sharks of the 60's and early 70's. And since the new vette doesnt look anything like an early 70's vette it seems strange to bring it back..other then a strictly marketing decision.
I know they love to reuse RPO codes but this seemed a bit different.
You are not the only one..... just one of a small minority. That is allowed Did you hear---- they are coming out with a Z28 Camaro and already have a new Boss 302 Mustang?
However, I don't think there's anything wrong with it. It's a radically different car. It also is the fastest base Corvette yet by a significant margin. It's got the greatest interior out of any Corvette ever produced. It has the greatest racing inspired technology in any car of its class, including previous generations of Corvettes.
I say I agree with GM in that the C7 has earned the moniker.
I hardly find it sad. The Stingray name was ALWAYS a marketing ploy for any and all Corvettes after the real Stingray racer! To think otherwise is just silly.
The Grand Sport was just as much a ploy for any and all Corvettes. The real Grand Sport was an awesome car.

Not at all. Ford has kept the Mustang name sense the intro of their car. The Stingray name should've never been taken from the car.
But then.....it appeals to me.

I still think of all Sting Rays and Stingrays, old and C7, as Corvettes first and foremost, just like every other variation of every year's Vette. If I was buying a C7 right out of the chute, I think I would still tell people I was getting me a 2014 Corvette.
Of course it's marketing - intended to use nostalgia, which is all the rage, to stir additional interest in the C7 product. There were never any parameters qualifying a car as a 'stingray' and there are none now other than the marketing gurus think it will sell.
Maybe for the performance variants of the C7, they'll reintroduce the "Blue Flame" engine name?
Everyone is using nostalgia to sell things these days - the older folks have the money and the younger folks are drawn to retro

Well said, although I have to admit at first I was like, what the.....?
I guess i am a minority. the RPO codes dont bother me to much, even though now when i say i have an LT1 it will be more explaining since its usually assumed a 2nd gen LT1 in a c4. grrrr
but yes i wouldnt be suprised if they bring back LT4/LT5 for the Z engines.
something about the stringray, and also Z28 just is like.. to much trying to sell cars based on just the name. if they put chrome bumpers back on them and had a removable back window and no hatch i would be way more ok with using stingray.. those are 2 things i think of most when i hear that name
btw i know legally you cant have those but who cares about safety i want some damn chrome bumpers!

What I totally don't get is why the name is not even on the car. What's the point of adding a second name (as in "Corvette Stingray") if the second name does not separate it from other models, and if it's not on the car. Who are they trying to impress with the name?
The name would (will?) make more sense when there are multiple secondary names and the Stingray name actually tells us something about that particular model that separates it from other models.
I'm not a fan of script, flags or badges on a car. Anyone who doesn't know this is a corvette is blind. Maybe put the word stingray non the inner door sill so if someone asks you just open the door and the word stingray is there.
This new c7 has stunning muscular taut body lines and that really says it all in its knife edge sharp styling.
JMO and I'd be taking off those stingray chrome like appendages on the front fenders as I owned the car.
