C7 Corvette Chief Engineer Explains Why 6 Speed Auto Transmission Chosen

As I will finally be looking for an auto, the C7 automatic's performance is of interest this time around. The fact that they don't really need an 8 speed to meet their mpg goals YET seems obvious.
The 9-10 speed that GM and Ford are co-developing will be interesting to watch.

It's all horse ****....they have the 6 speed because they don't have anything else ready yet.
The 6 speed would be ok if it didn't shift like a lazy old lady. The reason the auto ZL1, C6 and CTS-V are bashed so much is because of the lazy transmission. Compared to what comes in other cars these transmissions are pretty poor
It's the reason I'll be getting the manual C7....the auto C6 was such a disappointment.

I had a 6L80 in my 07 Sierra Denali and it was horrible. It downshifted so slowly , it was like a brass era "pre-selector" type transmission. Sometimes it banged into gear so hard, I thought I had ran over an IED. On the other hand, my 12 CTS-V's 6L90 is the best shifting automatic transmission I have ever had.
I haven't heard any more complaints about the 6L90 since the fix, but I have always wondered whether the same fix was made to the 6L80. Anyone know?

Not to rain on the parade but this video is almost 7 months old now. I am pretty certain we know all there is to know about the 2014 Corvette.
Also, I think Tadge is towing the company line about the 6 speed auto (the 8 speed isn't ready yet). It would not surprise me a bit if the new 8 speed auto goes in the C7 in 2015 or 2016 model years.

$55.7 million in Toledo Transmission Operations for increased capacity and tooling to produce an all-new, advanced 8-speed automatic transmission and an existing 6-speed transmission. The Toledo-based 8-speed will be used in numerous GM vehicles by the end of 2016.

"The new 8-speed line will not be in full production until the first quarter of 2014"
http://www.13abc.com/story/18769971/...d-transmission
I'm speculating here, but, if the 8 speed line is up and running in the 1st quarter of 2014, then it might possibly be in the 2015 C7 next spring.
From GM Media, revised June 21, 2013....Toledo, OH plant
"Products: Hydra-matic 6L50/80/90 Rear-Wheel-Drive 6-Speed
Global Front-Wheel-Drive 6-Speed Gen1, Gen2
GF6Gen3/ RWD 8-Speed"
It appears that GM is running about a year behind schedule. In January 2012, GM said they would have the 8 speed RWD transmission in production by first quarter of 2013.

Perhaps I've missed something, but I see no inference whatsoever that any of these are high end dual clutch trannys. If they are going to be used in numerous GM vehicles, as stated, they are not likely anything much beyond the current automatics. Except that every year these will likely shift more, and more closer the the speed of a good DCT.
I also agree that engines with the torque bands of these Corvette LS and LT series engines have little need for anything much more than 6 speeds unless the objective is a few more MPG's.
A quad over head cam engine like the old ZR1 had? Yeah, there was no real torque until almost 2,000 RPM so with it's RPM range, a dual clutch 6 or 8 speed probably would have transformed the beast. But, other than bragging rights these pushrod engines have zero performance needs for 8 speeds, quite the opposite actually.
Six speed dual clutch? You bet. But, what percentage of Vette owners really want to spend $10,000 to $15,000 more to underwrite the true extreme track performance needs of maybe 1% of Corvette owners. The answer: not enough.

I also have the same cheap carpet as you do. Like you, I've never paid attention to that.
