Since it seems all components are there is the navigation system just software ?
Nav uses GPS which is both HW and SW, doubt that the Hw is already there. Unless the OnStar HW is tied into it which then raises this question:
Will the Nav work without an active OnStar subscription? And can the map be updated in the future without OnStar? I assume so but having read many negative complaints about OnStar at other websites I don't want to assume anything.
It seems that folks have been screwed because some functions that are not so obvious are also lost without an active subscription and they were never told about it by the dealer nor the OnStar people but used as selling points. Also trying to stop future subscription after the initial freebie period can be iffy, OnStar just charges your credit card anyway on some pretext and often manages to charge you for another month or two and since things are done on the phone there is no proof of prior conversations. OnStar presumably only deals with the person whose name is on the subscription, no one else not even a spouse, which might be a hassel for some. All this is based on stuff I've read recently, just google 'onstar reviews 2013'.
Navigation systems are becoming obsolete anyway, smart phones are better in that the maps constantly update for free.
I read in a recent issue of MT that Apple has made deals with about a dozen car manuf., mostly Euro and Asian but also GM that certain Apple products will tie in with the car's info/entertainment system starting next year. I wonder if this means the C7 will also have this functionality, if so the Nav like you say is obsolete for those with a smartphone, esp. newer models of Apple products, would be nice to have the car's display show what's on the product's screen. Hopefully the Bluetooth function will work well with phones and tablets and the audio system. Hope someone reports on this as soon as they get their C7.

I was truly surprised to see GM make it an option on the first two trim levels rather than ramming it down our throats. I have it in the 3LT, '12 C6 and I never use it. In fact, I think my s/o accidentally tried to play it in her car. Thought it was a Beatles CD ............

I can't disagree more. Recently purchased a Nissan Leaf with navigation, the system is super, can't believe the display and user friendly capability. Yesterday I took my C6 without navigation to look up a destination for the wife. Used my iPhone, the darn thing, hate the Nav presentation and I have more than one version on it, both suck. Not user friendly, can't see the display in traffic. I was ready to toss it from the car, stressed out! I now know what is available which makes the iPhone more horrid. The navigation in the C7 is worth every penny. Bet my blood pressure wasn't even on the scale.

I like my Droid navigation better than my wife's Apple nav. But anyway I can't imagine the Droid nav being any easier, I can even just tell it to find where I want to go with voice command. Problem with built in nav is what they charge to update, I think Chrysler wanted 250 bucks to upgrade my wife's Nav, told them to get lost we'll just use the phone.
I will pay the update charge if applicable. If you have an accident trying to interpret your hard to see iPhone, the update fee will be a bargain. After yesterday, the first option I check when ordering my C7 is navigation.

I hope you guys in CA (where I live) realize using the Nav on your phones is illegal now. I would rather tuck my phone away and not mess with it for directions, and have Nav in my dash. Much better and it integrates in the dash and HUD displays.. the phone solution does not. Using the Nav on your phone requires you to look down while messing with it, the integrated one is much easier to mess with and is safer.
I don't have a smartphone yet, hope to get the latest in a couple of months. Aren't there smartphone dashboard mounts? And couldn't the phone be connected to the audio system via Bluetooth? Maybe the Nav display on the phone is too small for a dash mount, don't know. Comments anyone?

There are all kinds of aftermarket phone mounts so should be possible, my droid screen is about the same size as a Tomtom I have so shouldnt matter. Yes the phone hooks up via bluetooth, when I get in my truck music starts playing instantly from my phone via bluetooth into the trucks audio system.
be aware that you get Navigation and not turn by turn Navigation as one is an actual map nicely done and the other is a voice that yells at you. Wife found this out on her new fully loaded Impala LTZ that we assumed had navigation and later figured out only had "Turn By Turn" It's amazing how much you actually use that little map on the screen for bypassing stuff.
