The C5 had one open cup holder that Dave Hill described as "pretty crummy".
The C6 had two cup holders that work pretty well, and the sliding cover is invisible when opened. Much better.
The C7 has a double cupholder with a flip-up lid, which looks invisible when closed but rather redundant and silly when open.
I have never understood why some people consider a cup holder to be so ugly that it must be concealed when not in use.
Well, the advantage of the new design is that it is dual-purpose. With the center insert, it creates the two cup holders. But with the insert removed, it acts as another cubby pocket. It's the perfect size for a pair of sunglasses. It's nice having the lid when you are using the space for accessories or change rather than cups.
Got my new C7 last Friday and thankfully the only complaint I have so far is the cupholders! The first time I put my coffee mug in one, it tipped over as soon as I accelerated. They are as shallow as ever. If that's the only problem I have I will be happy!

Same thing happened to me on my first off ramp with my C6! Hard to make them deeper with the tunnel right below. For the C6 I purchased a holder that fit on the passenger side of the console. That won’t work well with the C7.
Expected the same problem so already purchased something I believe will work. My C7 just made 4B00 so will soon find out! I purchased a carbon fiber bicycle water bottle holder from eBay. Have modified it by removing the upper bottle holder lip and will cut the bottom when I see how the C7 water bottle I purchased fits. My intent is to bolt it to the center insert. We’ll see if works as intended. If I ever want to close the lid, I can just remove the whole insert. Will take some pics assuming it works.
Here are a couple of pics in case you didn't catch them in another thread. The center divider is a simple slide in/out. It catches on a plastic clip, so you can't slide it side to side to clamp more securely on a small bottle.
