Default Dropped Off For Paint Correction; Picking Up With 30 Miles Added To Odo

I dropped my car off at the dealer last week to correct a couple defects I found in the paint – supposed to be ready for pick up tomorrow afternoon. On a whim, I checked my OnStar app this morning and it shows that there are 30 MORE miles on the odo now than where I left it - the body shop is less than 100 yards from the service department.

I’ll validate all this tomorrow when I pick the car up, but if my OnStar app isn’t flaking out and this is correct, what do I do in this situation?

Thanks!

see update in post #115 - thanks

You have a very polite conversation with the GM of the dealership and the get him to comp you for letting him and his friends take test drives in your new car.

Before oyu go ballistic just see the service manager for an explanation. It is possible they vended out the job to a shop they use as they were busy, did not have the same mix equipment, who knows the reason....

plenty of time to raise hell...try calm directness first...

I also agree. They may not have trusted their own body shop or a nearby one to get a Corvette up to standard.

I am glad to hear they took the car in to fix the issues you found.

I talked to a Chevy sales manager about a C7 they had for sale. The person who ordered it had declined the car because it had many paint issues. The manager told me that the paint would be corrected not at their facility but they would send it to an expert company to ensure the best result. Probably what happened to yours..

Make them squirm - if your car needed to be dropped off at another garage 15 miles away, it should have been you doing the driving and not they.

It looks like your versed in PM and what is good PM all about? Answer: communication. There was no need for 30 miles to be added to your car for body work, and this was at least a inexplicable breakdown in communication. Silver is a tough color to get right and your glad they took it to a shop they knew who could do the job right, but you should have been told up front that this was going to be the case, and instead of dropping your car off at the dealer, you should have dropped off and picked back up, at the subcontracted body shop.

Your car looks great by the way, I love the red calipers and chrome wheels on silver!

Collect and confirm [all] the facts, determine if there’s any fault on the part of the dealership, IF so… perhaps then suggest a few free oil changes as compensation, and politely request that the vehicle not be subject to any such future mismanagement when deposited in their care.

I would tread carefully on this one. If you want to continue to use this dealer for service you gain absolutely nothing by trying to get somebody in trouble over this. Think of how they are going to treat you next time you come for an oil change. No damage was done and just remember to these guys its just another Chevy.

They had to take it out on the Interstate for a 150 MPH blast, in order to dry the paint.

I would be pissed either way. No way that car was not driven hard in any of those 30 miles and you know it was flogged if it was painted on site at the dealership. Isn't there a way you can recall where the car was driven through the Nav?

I'd ask for them to pay for the real detail.

If you require the use of an ultrasonic paint thickness gauge to check anything, I might know someone who has one.

Nothing you could really do at this point. Next time you bring it in ask the service advisor nicely to please call you before your car is driven out on the public roads. That way they know not to take it out unless they call you.

You should have snapped a pic of the lifetime Revs and that would tell you how hard they drove the car.

Place a voice activated recorder in the car next time like someone else did awhile back and recorded the service guys talking about doing burn outs.

Check the mileage in figure on the work order when you pick up the car, then if there still is a discrepancy ask politely about it. The guy handling your checkout almost certainly was not the one adding the miles, and you can make your point without beating him up verbally.

By the way, if I had a car in for paint work I would not expect to have to drive my own car to and from an off-site paint shop. I've got better things to do with my time. If you read the fine print there's probably a line or two allowing this in any case.

Sure, it's your baby, but why worry? Be happy. You own a C7!

The first thing any Corvette owner should do when dropping off their car for servcie is. Tell the service manager/advisor I wrote down how many miles are on the car now. I do not want anybody driving it.

Hey MH,

I am very sorry for the extra miles on your baby! Please let me know if I can help out in anyway. I can call the dealership for you and ask about the miles. Please let us all know what happens. Thanks,
