You guys can make fun of skullbusa all you want but he is correct about the only way to significantly improve mpg is with lighter vehicles. I do not want to go back in time in any way but mpg has not significantly improved for 3 to 4 thousand lb vehicles since the late 50's. You could get 18 to 20 mpg highway with stock 1957 gm vehicles. I also agree the manufacturers are doing a great job complying with laws and providing wonderful cars. My son recently did a tour in Afghanistan and was telling about new brand name cars that sell for 2,000.00 there. They are totally stripped versions. Those vehicles would sell here if they were legal. Please save the safety and environment remarks as I am just trying to make a point.

concerning composites.. GM, Ford, Mercedes, and a couple others were supposedly working on a project to create a mass producible carbon composite. dont know what came of it but yea. also, the carbon brakes on teh ZR1 are actually 1/3 of the price of what that sort of package used to cost.

Magnetorheological fluids - They seem to be adding some non-magnetic particles in with the magnetic particles. Two stated goals are reduced sized and mass.

Hydroforming - The 2005 application seems to have died. Too bad, it looked cool. These papers probably tell you a lot about how the C6 and C7 aluminum
frames are built.

Automatic Transmissions
- There are so many (well over 100) GM patents on eight-, nine-, ten-, eleven- and twelve-speed transmissions, I'm not even going to try and be
comprehensive.

I don't think that's what is doing it. Text will automatically wrap.

I think it's the way the YouTubes were imbedded. Need to use the [yt] tags.

EDIT:

Actually, it was probably the very long string at the end of Post No 11.
