Just came from the Dealer to take a look at the new C7 Stingray Vert. I was informed the convertible doesn't have a roll-bar. Is that true? If so, how will be auto-X, track, race a vert?
All Corvette Stingray Convertible models come equipped with dual front and side airbags in addition to traction and stability control systems. Pop-up rollbars deploy in the event of rollover incidents to protect passengers' noggins.

AWESOME! Thank you. I will advise the dealer as well. Now, the choice is either a VERT or Z06....the end of Jan will be the deciding time.....

Pop up roll bars? I have not seen that mentioned anywhere else and don't see how that could work. Has anyone seen this explained? I haven't even seen it in any GM literature.

I'm nearly 100% positive that Left Lane is incorrect with this. Look through the Safety Features of the Corvette convertible on GM's site. There's absolutely no mention of a pop-up roll bar.

I had a mercedes 4 passenger convertible with a pop up that worked well. I did not flip the Mercedes but I was going fast enough over a dip in the road to get all 4 wheels off the pavement. The roll bar shot up instantly. The roll bar happened to be the rear passenger head rest, the head rest shot up about 12 inches which should have been enough to protect anyone that was belted in

I just saw the vert at the LA Auto Show. I didn't see any, or any place they could pop out of.
The government required roll-over structures are the A-pillars.
I think that if the car did include a rear roll-over bar then it should be exempted from the A-pillar requirement. That could allow for aerodynamic development. For instance, the rear windshield frame on a Porsche 914 is a roll-over structure.
And a rear roll-over bar would be either stronger or weigh less because it is a column rather than a cantilevered beam.
Also if the car is not a hydroformed frame, then the strength at the front of the car should go into a bulkhead that holds the connection to the engine and suspension mounts. The A-pillars just stick up in the air and don't do anything (as far as connecting the front suspension to the rear suspension). Well, connect the A-pillar supports at the rocker panel and at the dashboard and that's a bulkhead. But go find it on a folded-sheet-metal-unibody.
See, the Corvette doesn't need a front bulkhead because the hydroformed rocker panel reaches all the way to the front suspension. Then the rocker panel reach to the rear suspension looks like a minor tie and so the Corvette does have a rear bulkhead
.
Even on the non-convertible Vette I noticed that the headroom was not very high. I am 6'2" and I may be have 1-2" up on top from the side of the pillars. If that car (God forbid) were to roll over we would be talking some major damage to the human head. The frontal bone on our head would most likely act as the roll bar which would not end very well.
If either the convertible or the non-convertible were to roll I would do my best to keep my head to the side slide down the seat to keep my skull from being crushed. If the guys at GM had given us an extra 1" or 2" for safety in the event of a roll over that would have been nice. Even with a roll bar behind the seats that roll bar would be sitting parallel to our head meaning if the top part caved in a few inches it would cave in directly on our heads. There are no airbags there that would protect the driver or passenger in the event of a roll over. All the airbags would do well in the event of a front or side impact but not in a roll over situation.
If you look carefully at the image below you will see that the front and back do not hold up well in the event of a roll over and that the seat head rest seems to be the highest part of the car so if your head sits at or above the headrest it may be your roll bar if this Vette were to roll. I always like a few inches of space on top of me so that in the event of a roll over and if the top were to cave in an inch, two or three there would be some distance before my skull gets crushed.
