How often do A6 owners use the paddle shifters?
I am curious to know how A6 owners use their paddle shifters.

Maybe 5% of the time. Usually to downshift.
Two years ago we took a vacation on great Corvette roads in our 2011 C6 Grand Sport and used the Paddles a lot. It was great. Some of the best driving ever. If you get on winding, mountain roads you have to try them.

I use the paddles almost 95% of the time, but I have to say that I'm disappointed in Chevy's placement of them. I have a few sports cars (2014 GTR, 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo, 2009 Lamborghini Gallardo). The Gallardo and GTR have the paddles mounted to the steering column, where the Porsche and C7 have them attached to the steering wheel itself. To me, this make for a very awkward position, especially when driving winding roads and taking corners. I would much rather have them mounted to the column or have the option to up and down shift with the stick if the steering wheel is turned and the paddles are in an awkward position.

Occasionally - when the transmission upshifts higher than I want it to. I downshift to hold it in 3rd or 4th, which seems to as close as a "universal gear" as it gets. Most M7 guys keep their car in 3rd and 4th on the tract 90% of the time, because it hits the LSn / LT1 "sweet spot" in torque.

I do not have a C7, but on past cars I have never used them. I have owned 3-4 cars with them and honestly have not used them even one time. If I want a Manual I get one, to me the buttons made little difference, just put it in sport mode.
I could see using them on a track, that is about it IMO
That said, if they catch up and put a nice PDK in the car you would be amazed, you do not even have to shift on a track, it does it all, just change the settings.

Never had it on my C6, but on other cars I use it 99.9% of the time.
The one thing none of these do (including a PDK) is anticipate what gear you are going to need to be in. Mercedes is trying to do that by reading the road ahead, but I don't think its on a production car yet.

My A6 is in the Camaro, but I use the paddle shifters 99.7 percent of the time. The other .3 percent is when I am backing out of my driveway and you can't use them in reverse. The paddle shifters are the closest thing I can get to a manual transmission. If I could, I would have a manual, but I am physically unable to drive a manual transmission. I do have to agree that a PDK transmission in these cars would be fantastic and I do think we will see it someday. I have a PDK in my VW R32 and it does shift much quicker.
p.s. I do not use the paddle shifters when I take the car down the track. So I should say that I use the paddles 99.4 percent of the time.
