Default Did this really happen?

Today it was about 50 degrees out so I was able to drive the car a little harder then I have been. Been 15 here for a month.

I was merging on to the pa turnpike waiting for an opening of traffic so I could merge to the lane of my choice. I came off the ramp at 60? in 3rd gear, when I saw the opening I punched it to merge left and I felt the rear end break lose and slide(towards the wall) a bit. I put 25000 on my C6 and drove much harder, never had anything like that happen.

So a base NON-Z51 car?

You could have hit some dirt / salt / rocks and lost it a little bit.

I was driving along just cruising in 7th at 55 and changed lanes and lost the rear a little! Then again it was 25 degrees out and I'm in Z51 Summer tires.

Even though the air may have been 50, it has been so cold this January, including below freezing yesterday, that I doubt the road surface was much above 35 degrees.
Summer tires, plus lots of hp on cold roads and what you got was the end result.

Not to hijack but I will probably need to drive my M7 Z51 home in 15 to 25 deg temps but clear roads. I assume as long as I don't get stupid, it'll be OK?

You'll be fine, just be gentle with the throttle when coming off the line.

I've driven my C7 with it was -5 out and the rear got out slightly from me turning slowly from a light!

Absolutely, Mine not a Z51 but I've driven multiple 4 hour trips while it was 15 out. I have 5000 miles in 3 months and they have been cold. No punching

Doesn't the stability control kick in before this happens?

Cheers.

Before I sold my C6, it was a DD that was driven in everything but snow but did drive in 10 to 30 degree temps all time. Same for my wife's ZO6 - both cars had (have?) General Exclaim UHPs which are "summer only" tires too. Never had a bit of problem as long as I realized cold tires and cold road surfaces don't mix well.

I'm hoping the Z51 Michelins aren't terribly worse

Ok, sorry for the hijack....

Interesting. On my BMW you can feel when stability control kicks in most of the time when it does, and you can see the little light flash on the dash that it is working. Even with it in "sport" mode, it will give you a little slide before reigning things in. May I ask, what mode you were in?

Cheers.

Were the tires warmed up ? Also out today in NY for a drive and spent the first hour in W because although 50 degrees out there was a thin moist film on the ground. Actually quite surprised how good it behaves in W. After tires warmed up good switched to S and only really got on it when pointed straight ahead.

I was on the rd. for 30 minutes so the tires were not cold.

Multiple things going on here when comparing to a C6. More torque, much quicker throttle response, much less cold friendly tires and a more advanced traction control system that allows for more slip angle.

General UHP's and most "summer" tires are not great in the cold but the Michelin PSS tires fall off a lot faster under 40 degrees than most summer tires.

Also, driving harder isn't the same as going faster and in virtually all situations you'll find the C7 is going faster than the C6 even if it doesn't feel like it's being pushed as hard.

Driving 30 minutes on cold roads won't guarantee the tires are generating any significant heat. The temp warning on the tires doesn't say under 40 until you've driven for a while, it's simply under 40.
