Default Performance Exhaust

I know the Performance Exhaust option increases horsepower by five (5) and provides different tips, but what other benefits are derived from ordering this fairly pricey ($1,100.00) option? I am getting a factory order together and trying to spend my money as wisely as I can.

Thanks...

You get the opportunity to change the exhaust volume and tone with ease - all with no drone. Why do people install an aftermarket exhaust primarily? To change tone. Least expensive way to do it is the factory exhaust option.

It also allows for both a quiet mode and loud mode depending upon settings and preference.
If you are trying to spend your money as wisely as possible, you will purchase a Base 1LT with zero options. Those can be had for less than $49,000 (MSRP $51,995).
GM makes more on options than anything else. The painted caliper option costs GM $0 (because they are all painted anyway), but sells for $595; the sport seats sell for $1,995, they are built on the same frames and reportetly cost GM $200 more than the regular seats to make; Chrome wheels $1,995 and cost GM $300. You get the picture,

The NPP exhaust (which is $1195) was an absolute must for me! The sound is fantastic, gives 5 more HP and 5 more lbs. ft. of torque, looks much more aggressive from the rear with the large tips. In fact, this is my only option on my car and couldn't be happier with it!

I agree with you about many of the other options available....but not the NPP exhaust. I think $1195 is well worth it for the reasons I stated.
And to answer the OP question....It is the SOUND above all that enhances the total driving experience!

Doesn't the driving mode selector (eco, tour, track, etc.) also effect the exhaust setting/note and is the NPP exhaust option required for that interface to occur?

If you have the NPP option the exhaust flaps will automatically open (louder) in Sport or Track modes. However, you can adjust for sound in any mode if you turn the system off. (Off means it is actually open flaps = louder) I have mine off and drive mostly in Touring mode for that great sound.

So therefore, am I correct in assuming there is still some level of exhaust interface with the mode selector, even if the car does not have the NPP option?

Not really. Without NPP all you have is the ECO mode valves. They will operate when the car goes into ECO mode (AFM) just to keep the exhaust from sounding like crap when in 4 cylinder mode. There is no "sound level" adjustment without NPP.

It's great for people that live in states where the troopers like to harass people for "modified" exhaust. Such as Virginia......

Without NPP your exhaust will sound the same regardless of what driving mode you choose.

Here's some photos (thanks to talon90) of the NPP (and ECO valves). The ECO valves are before the mufflers and the NPP are the valves after the muffler - right before the exhaust tip):

The NPP valve opens up a less restrictive path through the muffler that results in less back-pressure, more HP and torque and a louder exhaust sound.

The non-NPP exhaust has the ECO valve and only a single outlet pipe from the muffler that the splits into the 4 exhaust tips. No NPP valve.

you can have the exhaust open up in two of the 5 driving modes if you choose that setting in the menu. Sport and track will be open modes.

Or you can open them up on all modes with a setting. you can't mix and match.

The NPP tips look better at 4 inch than the smaller stock ones. But like everything else here, you can get the impression reading here if you don't get the NPP the car sounds like a Lexus limo...far from the truth - it sounds nice and sports car like without NPP.

I would probably not buy it again as after roaring around town for a few months, I set it for quiet most of the time. Just me.

But you can't be the 4 inch tips and my car is all about looks over performanace,

I think it needs to be louder too. Any easy way to get the npp exhaust louder?

Rip and replace so in that case don't bother ordering it.

Most options are "worth it" to someone, or no one would buy them!
I agree the NPP is a nice option, and I bought it for my car, but I bet it costs GM no more than $400 (might be a lot less?) to make and install compared to the stock exhaust - giving that option a 250% profit margin and total profit of $640 per car).
I think on a cost to value basis, probably the best value (not saying worth it) is the 2LT, but again only if you want HUD, heated/cooled seats.
The same can be said of the Z51 - if you need to track your car, what it gives is good value for $2,800; if you don't track the car it doesn't make financial sense.

The NPP is a nice, audible but fairly tame option for sound. If you need to save money now, you can always add an after market exhaust later. The after markets do give you more "sound" options (imo), at about the same price. After getting the NPP on the C7, I think we are going to upgrade to an after market at some point.
