Is there a special socket for removing chrome lug nuts so you don't damage them or whats the trick that you use?
Yes. I bought a plastic lined deep socket designed just for that purpose for my C6. Don't recall where but google you'll find it. I have checked mine fits the C7. If you don't want to spend the money use a plastic bag and the proper socket. You'll go thu a few bags but had used that before buying the proper wrench.
Those are nice (I might pick up a set ) but won't protect the lug nuts... they will protect the wheel. I think the OP is looking for something to prevent damaging the nuts which would need something inside the socket.
Those are plastic on the outside. The one I have is a hard plastic on the inside so it does not harm the chrome. Found it at this site but I paid less, look around: http://www.eagleday.com/softlugsocke...tm_content=pla

FYI Harbor Freight has a ton of 20% and 25% off coupons around in the Sunday papers and car mags such as Car & Driver, etc...Might save you enough for a whole gallon of gas!

The initial question was is there a wrench that can protect the chrome lug nuts and some are talking about the Harbor Freight sockets that protects the wheels NOT the lug nuts. This is a pic of the one I have. It has a plastic insert to prevent scratching the chrome lug nut. I just checked and it does not rub on my black wheels, there is space. If that is a concern (not sure why there should be) you can just wrap the outside with clear packing tape! You can use a google search and find several sources.

Not sure how well these work but if you’re looking for a cheaper solution, found this $5.75 insert at: http://www.npdlink.com/store/product...2-81004.htmlap
It would slip into a thin wall 7/8 socket and provide a ¾ inch lug nut wrench. Again, if concerned about the outside touching the rim just put a wrap of packing tape around the outside of the socket.
FYI - factory lugs are stainless steel "capped"
Below - Gorilla aluminum black spline
You can get all the fancy lug sockets you want but nothing can protect the stainless steel cap from being damaged when removing or installing the lug nut. The cap twists on the actual nut it is covering and will come loose after a while. If you remove your wheels once or twice per year there may be less damage. If you remove them 15 or 20 times per year (track guys) they will start to fall apart.
