The "C" generation thing originated with the 1997 Corvette. It was considered the 5th generation. A new generation begins with a major change in the body style.
I was looking through an old 1968 magazine and the C1 were broke down as 3 generations...53-55.....56-57- 58-62

GM (Chevy) didn't start the "C" designation. That started with the fan base over the years to tell the various major variations apart easily. Chevy started using it too, but well after the Corvette community did. Technically the C1s, C2s and C3s (and C4s?) can be broken down into finer groupings for the purests (as mentioned above), but that is not commonly done.

New generations most certainly driven by sales, technological advances, competition from other manufacturers, etc.

Well there are only 7...
C1 starts in 1953 (or 1952 if you count the one show prototype)
C2 starts in 1963
C3 starts in 1968
C4 Starts in 1983 (if you count the one in the museum)
C5 starts in 1997
C6 starts in 2005
C7 starts in 2104

You can buy the current Corvette 'Black Book' with generations from 1953 C1 through 2014 C7. It has just about any stat you can think of from # of different models built, colors, serial #'s, option codes, and quite a lot of facts. It's good to have. I found the best price at Amazon when I bought mine. If you want to quote something with accuracy, it's the standard 'Go By'.

agree !!!!!!!!!!!

that is until the C7 came out and I just had to order one. no Corvette appealed to me to even get a small interest in after 1967 until now. had a 61 in high school and a 65 in 1983. they were totally off my radar for a long time. then with a combination of loving the new look and the technology built into it and with me now at age 65 it is kinda "now or never mode of living" I bought not just my first new Corvette, but my first brand new car in my life.
