Hi, I'm trying to figure out what paperwork I should have before a shipper picks up my new car at a dealer. I understand that they will have a Bill of Lading and I delegate the condition report to the dealer. It just seems everyone is too easy-going on this. Shouldn't there be a contract or some paperwork before the shipper arrives at the dealer?
Thanks..
Btw, Angel Wings Transport out of Atlanta is the shipper. The dealer recommended. They have a good thread here. I have his insurance info and I feel pretty good about it, but not used to zero paperwork.
I too am wondering why it seems so easy to book such a move without any paperwork up front. I am having a c3 moved from MO to CA and have checked references, etc. for several companies and was looking for some info. on how you found a reputable carrier. I am considering JTD Logistics out of Cincinnati and Totalcaretrans out of Kansas City. Anyone know these guys? Thanks, KT
Well one thing they will do is inspect the vehicle for damage and have you sign acknowledging any discrepancies before ship and then you will inspect it on delivery and if satisfied you will sign that same form stating your satisfied with your cars condition.
I went through passport and was also surprised when there was no terms of agreement signatures or other paperwork to sign.

Passport? Is that a third party arranger? Couldn't find on the web
you need make the dealer send you the owner docs, not put them in the car. if you checked their insurance and they are licensed carrier, then, you don't really need paperwork.
simply tell the dealer they are picking up your car. do a condition report upon leaving. most of these guys have GPS tracking so you can track the truck. also good idea to be clear about what kind of equipment is picking up car and will it be moved to other equipment. this can be a problem, as most damage occurs loading and unloading. hope this helps.

Thanks Hope2, I'm not too worried, I know it's a reputable dealer and they recommended the shipper. Of course I have no proof of that recommendation.
Other interesting legal questions (for all you lawyers out there) given zero paperwork:
How is the dealer legally authorized to inspect and sign the bill of lading?
How is the dealer legally authorized to turn over the car to anyone?
How is the shipper legally obligated to deliver the car to me?
If I file a claim against his insurance what stops him from just saying.."huh? never heard of the guy"
I agree it would have to be quite a scam, but like I said, what would a judge do with this level of disorganization! I do have a few email exchanges with the shipper where he quotes price and pickup/delivery date though
Hi Nivek1, you can just search for intercity on the red menu bar, they are another big name shipper. You'll bring up a ton of threads about people asking for shipping recommendations. In this thread I'm trying to explore the process rather than find shippers. Good luck!

Thanks guys. Appreciate your input. Have found many big carriers now and remarkable close in their quotes. KT
