Multiple threads on this topic in the C6 Section. Horse power increase claims by various manufacturers. Some members have actually done dyno runs where no increases were noted. I personally changed my stock C6 filter to an Airaid and did not notice any gains.
i like the cleanability of it, so ill get one, but i expect no hp gains from it...
When it comes to airflow (2x is baloney), I'm a lot more interested in it's performance in removing small dust particles. None of the aftermarket "performance" filters are as good as the Donaldson and the performance gains they provide are miniscule.
If you live in the Northeast or where they use salt on the roads in winter and you drive your car year round just look at all the fine salt dust that is kicked up by other cars. Do you want that in your engine?
I don't live where they do that crap. Here's what Airaid has to say:
these filters offer significant improvements in air flow and filtration while being washable and reusable.
I do not think you can find a filter that will do a better job filtering than the OEM fiber/paper filters, you can of course get filters that flow more at the expense of filtering ability; I find the synthetic dry media filters to be a very nice balance of the two.
Here’s my take on these “cleanable performance air filters”
From their website:
We start with multiple layers of cotton gauze combined with our unique filtration technology resulting in a superior filtration system. All AIRAID® Premium Filters trap the smallest dirt particles that ordinary cotton-gauze “performance” filters can’t capture.
There is nothing presented to back up those claims. Why don’t they show actual test data if the filter is actually superior to the stock filter? I’ll tell you why, they don’t because it isn’t.
And what would you expect them to say?
In general air filter design deals with two primary factors: 1. Airflow 2. Particle capture performance. Simply stated, large holes increase airflow but decrease particle capture performance. And vice versa. Cotton-gauze has large holes to increase airflow but they pass the smaller particles right through them. The stock filter has less airflow but the advantage is better filtration.
Now what about cost effectiveness? The stock Donaldson (latest technology in air filtration) costs something like $100 and is good for 37,500 miles. How many of you put 37,500 miles on your Corvette as long as you own it? Even if you do, it will cost you ~ $100 to drive 75,000 miles. Now who does that?
The AirRaid is around $100 and $10 for a cleaning kit. So even if they were as good as the stock filter at filtering you’d have to drive over 75,000 miles before you’d see any cost advantage.
So there is no cost advantage, there is surly no filtering advantage and you might get a miniscule HP gain along with dirty air. And you have to mess with cleaning it. Doesn’t sound very good choice to me. I’ll stay stock.

Well stated Walt. That's why I use stock in the C6 and, the H-D Street Glide. I will do so with the C7.
