I know this topic has been touched upon on other threads but I could really use a little more specific information on what is involved and how it turned out. Could anyone that has done this give some specifics on how they finished the side spears and how they were able to eliminate any paint edges and if they JUST clearcoated the painted spears and NOT the whole roof top, ect. Were you happy witht the job performed and did it look like a factory finish. What might I expect it to cost?
Thanks in advance.....just a little nervous about someone screwing it up but I really like the look.
One problem no one has explored AFAIK is if paint will even stick to the coating on the clear top. I wonder it you need to remove the coating down to the base polycarbonate before it will stick, and then the same question arises; will it even stick to that? No answers... just something to think about.
I had it done at my buddy's paint shop on my CG car. It looks great. and is a perfect match. You need to tape off the part you don't want to paint. Then scuff the hell out of it. (Make damn sure you don't scuff the wrong part as it cant be fixed once you do that) Then paint and clear it.
IT WILL HAVE A PAINT LINE EDGE! since you cant bury it in clear. I don't think there is any way to clear the center of the top because you have to scuff it to get the paint to stick and that will wreck the top.
I am very happy i did it. I did not want a clear top and had to settle on one. The once my girl rode in it she made me keep it. It really fixes the lines from the side of the car to have it the right color.
Again, very happy i did it.
I had that done and painted on the stinger for $400. But remember i did it at my buddies show and got a deal.

I was quoted $967 to have the side spears painted and to also have the stinger painted and that was in Columbia, MO where the cost of living is not near as high as in many areas of the country........so yes you got a great deal!
I just wonder if the paint edge is greater than what you would find from the factory on the exposed CF roof. Perhaps it is all gel coated though????????? I would think they should be able to feather down the edges to minimize them and then clear coat what is painted.....do you agree?
My $.02
1) that's way to much $$ find a different shop.
2) Don't even try to "feather down the edge" If you scuff that clear top with the sand paper you will be sorry.
It is greater than the CF top yes. But it really is not to bad for how much better it makes the car look. Besides who the heck but you would run there finger in that edge. Tell them not to touch the car haha. But really it is not to bad at all once you accept in your head its going to be there.
I agree... don't try to feather the edge... too much trouble and you risk scuffing the clear part that won't be covered by paint. Or, you can try to find a vinyl wrap that's close in color or plasti-dip.

I thought it sounded too high as well and I will get a second estimate before I make any decision. You have given me great advice on the side spears and I greatly appreciate it. I guess I tend to stress too much because I am equally torn on finding someone to paint the stinger since they will have to rough up the clearcoat on the hood....but I think it would look so much better than the factory stinger if done properly. I just want a factory look and I may be expecting too much.
I had it done and love the results. First they somehow etched the transparent roof so the paint would stick better. And, yes, there is a small edge, but since it is down in the groove, you really don't see it. Also painted the stinger stripe and since they redid the whole hood, there is no edge on the hood (as there is with the decal)
As you can see, I also had part of the roll bar painted with the carbon flash so make the line really flow across the whole car. Have had nothing but rave reviews from those who saw it.
The guys who sell the aftermarket stripe kits should be able to make you up a set to use on the roof. Should be a whole lot cheaper then painting plus you shouldn't have to damage the top.

I put the "eyebrow" Vinyl on my C7 that sits on to top of the Plastic Headlight assembly. The color CGM match is very close, but not exact.
I would think that Vinyl Strips could be cut to cover the Spears and the cost would be minimal.
I am generally not a fan of the black wheels, but the touches you have added to your car makes this one of the most beautiful c7's I have seen. I hope GM takes not of the black out of the roll bar. I think that would work with any color, given the car an even more sleek appearance. Great job!

Beautiful! You have done the exact work I would like to have done on mine. Any words of wisdom on doing the hood work? Did they remove your hood then just lightly sand your clearcoat layer before painting the stinger and re-clearcoating it? Do you remember the paint code for your carbon flash paint by chance? My car will look EXACTLY like yours but in TR with Red brake calipers.

Do you mind me asking what you paid for your paint work?

I love that look! In fact, when the C7 first came out, my pipe dream was to do what you did, but starting with AW. NICE!
Curious how matching A-pillars would affect the look.

Looks great man. I have a VY too exact as yours except the hood stripe and crossmember painted. I am actually thinking about it now. Probably will just go with carbon flash vinyl but still same look. Great job man.
