My C7 was immaculate, with everything working flawlessly. But, after putting the top back onto my coupe, I noticed a crack in the windshield from the top header spreading down, and it's now about 12" long. I don't recall even hitting the windshield with the top, and can only conclude that the glass is extremely delicate, or cracked from the slight pressure of closing the front roof clamp (driver's side). I just can't believe this! Does anyone have experience replacing the windshield on a C7? I'm concerned as this is the first and only Corvette ever sold by my Chevy dealer, and they're the only Chevy dealer on Grand Cayman. I'm considering a warranty claim. Any experience which might help? Thanks!
The windshield seems pretty stout to me. I've heard several rocks hitting very loudly while driving around and not a mark, unlike my C6 windshields. I doubt it is a warranty issue, unless you can prove it was stressed at installation or something. But most insurance policies cover glass damage 100%, I'd start there first.

quite unusual....however, it may have been a weight savings measure to use thinner glass...only a GM engineer will know...I've never seen it mentioned in any reviews. I do know the Ford Flex uses thicker glass for stiffness and noise suppression, so there is some variation in thickness in the industry.
I seem to remember a recent post where someone had the same problem (twice). It was suggested that there might be a rough edge or burr within the housing which was causing the windshield to crack.
I've taken a couple pretty good sized rocks already and no cracks yet, as stated maybe there is a high spot somewhere putting pressure on the edge of the glass.
I have to pretty much pound my top down at the front to seat it and no cracks, I could see slipping and whacking the glass with the top guide pin and cracking it though.
I had a stone hit my windshield 3 weeks after picking up! Safelite replaced HUD glass, no charge, insurance claim 0 deduct. 24 hours.
The "GM" logo'd glass was 3 weeks away. I opted for the generic HUD glass from the same manufacturer/supplier to GM as they were readily available.
Been good so far. good luck with your glass!! sorry to hear about the crack.

What do you mean by "HUD glass"? Are you referring to the windshield itself? And, do you mean that because my C7 is equipped with HUD, that the windshield is different from non-HUD cars? Thanks!

I'd bring it in to the dealer and it should be covered under the warranty. It's a stress crack. I'd get Chevy Customer Service involved and have them contact the dealer. The dealer will probably have a company like Safelite Autoglass replace it.

No such thing as a Safelite shop on Grand Cayman.
The windshield on my 2012 GS cracked from the lower right hand edge and up for about 6" at under 300 miles on the odometer. Once the service manager determined that it was not caused by something hitting it they replaced it under warranty with OEM glass. I took some close up pictures of the crack just in case it happened again. I watched them replace it and it was a very simple job and looks like nothing ever happened. Good as new.

Look in the lower corner of the windshield on the passenger side. You will see that the label indicates HUD.

Thanks! So the windshield for a C7 with HUD is different from the one for a C7 without HUD? Had no idea. Is this because different reflective characteristics are required for HUD projection?

One rock and 6 inches of crack from the top by the mirror!
Do the "Pen" test. Run a ballpoint pen along the crack..If you feel a glitch it's probably an impact that caused the failure. If you don't, likely a stress crack. Not totally unheard of. In this case it should be warranty.

Excuse my ignorance, but how do I do that? Thanks!

Have just PM'd you. Thanks for any help you can offer! Having to replace the windshield is a real bummer, but hoping that this can be done with the car "as new" again! I love this car, and treat it like my baby!
