ive seen a number of posts regarding the above. aside from any physical appeal, is there any good reason to purchase one of these--e.g., better insulation to enhance paint life on hood, noise mitigation? it would seem to me that since it would tend to retain heat under the hood, it would not be a good thing to have.

Are you aware that the C7 comes from the factory with these items? They just don't have any fancy painting on them. If so, it would be obvious that the purpose of purchasing these is strictly "appeal".
It's for noise attenuation. The modern Corvette purchaser's ears may be offended by mechanical noises, they are afraid, and if you look at some of the complaints being posted, they may be right.

It started with the LT1 in the 90's with the injectors, to the rocker arms on the LT4 so they went with plastic valve covers. Many people here on the forum have complained about engine noises.
The hood 'insulator' is just that.... can't have whiney Corvette owners complaining about a hot hood.
