i kept a land rover and an audi outside, while my wife kept hers inside. i found that mice were more the culprit than squirrels, given the small spaces they penetrated. it cost me $3,000+/- to replace essentially all my audi wiring and insulation under the hood. i didnt drive the car much, and really had no reason to look under the hood. when i did, ZOUNDS! the little bas***ds ate the wiring, the insulation on the firewall and the hood, and anything else they could find. they even made 2 small nests around the engine.
i have searched around for a solution and found none--went to all the auto shops. tried putting various repellents, including mothballs, under hood. but when i did, the smell was intolerable inside the cars--and probably not very good to inhale [ive also noticed a developing passion for cheese].
ANYBODY HAVE A SOLUTION--thats reasonable, dollar wise and effort-wise? it seems the best idea is to put something around the wheels, since thats the way they get up into the cars. the problem is that if it rains, you have to replace it each time, and when you drive the car, you have to get it back to exactly the same spot, or use more poison/repellent.(btw, i did rearrange things in the garage so i now have a space for the vette).
Rodents invading the garage has always been a fear of mine too. I use repellant when the car is in long term storage. I also have traps placed around the garage and have a few devices that use sound pulses to repel them. Ugh!

In Minnesota when we store our cars for the winter, if it's parked where mice will be a problem, use sheets of the fabric softener Bounce. The mice don't like the smell, but you will. My wife isn't home to ask, but a 120 sheet box can't be more than $5?
I have done this for a car that I store at the lake cabin and have never had a problem with mice, and I know there's lot of them around. I put the Bounce sheets everywhere, trunk, interior, engine bay, and the end of the exhaust pipes. Replace the sheets yearly.
Thanks for the tips concerning Bounce and Critter repellent.
At one time I had 5 rescue dogs so I air conditioned the garage and had toasty beds for all in winter
Since I fed them in the garage in bad weather ... well, ... you know the rest... Mice discovered the set up and bit by bit they transferred dog kibble into my Honda air cleaner. Bummer!! I set out poison in dog protected places and spring traps and pasted sticky traps in the entrance to the air cleaner. All 3 worked .... but I don't think as conveniently as Bounce and Critter repellant would have. Thanks!
You would not believe how much dog food there was in that air cleaner!
At least I kept them fed and they didn't eat the wires!

I've heard of mice chewing through car wiring. Not sure about squirrels, but mice will generally stay away from dryer sheets, supposedly. That and moth ***** can help.

Luckily I've never had problems with rodents in the garage and subsequently in the car. Hope that good fortune continues based on some of the stories here.
