One of our club members (Central Jersey Corvette Club) recently took delivery of a new C7 vert. Last week he discovered what he thought was a "stress crack" had appeared in the top corner/passenger side of the windshield. The crack started at the very top of the windshield about 8 inches from the A pillar, extending straight downward for about 5 inches, and then made a 90 degree turn running parallel to the roofline and ending back at the A pillar.
Just wondering if this is a common problem with this new model, or just a fluke? Also, any guesses as to what caused this? Comments.........?
Note: The local dealer where he purchased the car will be replacing the windshield under warranty. He reported that they first suspected a stone chip started the crack but there was no visible evidence of same and they ultimately agreed that it was some kind of "stress crack" or defect. If it matters, the windshield is the HUD type.
I had a stress crack on another vehicle's windshield. I believe it was a thermal issue. I was driving in heavy, summer rain and the crack opened after I hit the defogger. Cold air on the warm glass seemed to be the cause. SafeLite replaced the windshield and insurance covered it all.
I feel so bad after reading this thread. I bought a used 2014 certified from the dealer. I brought it home and covered it and took a vacation for two weeks. Got back and washed it when I discovered the crack on the passenger side. I was so mad at the dealer. Exchanged a bunch of emails on how they sold me a car with a cracked windshield and they claimed they didn’t. It is definitely cracked from the inside. I am going to take it back and get it fixed. I will keep you updated on my progress!!!
