Active Fuel Management (engine
cylinder shuts off)
4-Cylinder Mode
. Normal with automatic
transmission: The engine uses
8-cylinder mode when
accelerating, but changes to
4-cylinder mode when coasting.
. With manual transmission:
Active Fuel Management only
active in Eco Mode.
. Off in Manual mode with
automatic transmission unless in
Eco mode.
. Eco keeps the engine in
4-cylinder mode unless heavy
acceleration is needed.
To paraphrase what Zymurgy posted: AFM/DoD is only active on M7 cars in "E"co mode, but is active on A6 cars in all modes except when shifting in Manual mode (i.e. via paddles).

I believe that with an A6 it goes into the V4 in every mode except Track. But I can say that it is almost seamless from my experience so far. And GM uses the same technology on several of their cars & trucks as well as many other manufacturers.
We tried to compare Eco with other modes on a 2800 mile trip the last 2 weeks in my wife's C7 auto.
As other posters have said, the auto will shift to V4 in all modes except manual shift.
We couldn't tell when the car switched back and forth either by seat of the pants feel or exhaust note. It was really pretty seamless. The only way we could tell it was in V4 mode was to see the light come on in the dash display.
We tried driving the last 1000 miles in Eco mode just to compare fuel mileage. We used mostly sport and touring the rest of the trip. There was no difference in gas mileage in this mode than in the others.
If the auto shifts to V4 in all modes and there is no increase in mpg then what is the advantage of the Eco mode ? Why do we even have it ?
I haven't Snor, but the Diablo tuner has an option to turn it off.I don't know if that works for you!
My problem with that is that I 'think' that shows up as a "flash" to GM. The Range is just a plug in device that doesn't make any change to the PCM.
I am not 100% sure about the former.

In ECO with the auto it will make a difference in city driving, not really much on the highway. It will upshift quicker and dampen the throttle response and save some in stop and go driving. Probably not a whole lot. My last 335 BMW had the 'eco pro' mode that did the same thing, worth nothing on long highway trips, but made it feel like it had 50hp less driving around in town. It did help the mpg a bit in the city.
