Default Learning the hard way

Don't ever make the stupid mistake I made. Checked oil level on my
Z51 with the engine cold. What a mess after I added 2 quarts of oil.
After a trip to the dealer and cleaning up the mess, was told I could have damaged the engine. Feel like a real idiot.

It certainly could have been worse. It pays to do your homework with these cars but at least you learned something and will never make that mistake again.

In the future, when in doubt search this forum. There is plenty of info and DIY instructions here to do just about anything you want on the car from DIY oil changes and other maintenance to DIY supercharger installation and most everything in between.

Better yet, when in doubt read the Owner's Manual.

I have learned to do my oil level checks after pulling into the garage from a cruise. Pop the hood, wait 5 and check.

I did read the manual but skipped right over the part about the engine being warm because after all I have always checked the oil when cold on cars for years. I won't ever take anything for granted again.

It's a different animal with the dry sump as you found out. Good luck with the engine.

I have been observing some of the problems the dry sump oil system has caused some of the Forum members. The main reason I didn't order the Z51 option package was the dry sump oil system and decided on the base system (Saw no benefit for my car's projected operation). I have been around dry oil sump systems in other applications and know the special procedures associated with them. Unfortunately my first thoughts on this system are proving correct. I would like the dry sump oil system to be a stand alone selection. Now for 2015 even less item customizing, the Z51 package now has NPP as standard.

huh? I have seen no problems with the sytem posted, it's all with the owners...if you read the owners manual on how to check and drain the system, there are no problems..imagine that....

It really isn't that big of a deal. The biggest hassle is you have to get the oil up to the proper temp before you can see if you need to add any. That can be an issue if you are heading out for a track session with a cold engine so most people let the car idle for 15 to 20 minutes to heat the oil and then check it before pulling out.
