Bet it wasn't Mike Furman . . . . . He would never come up with that kind of garbage.
I suppose I should be asking - how is the GPS updated?
Is there a fee for this?
I know with my first TomTom there was a fee for new maps and then one day they came out with a version of "Lifetime" updates for free and I bought one, and updates have been free and works very well so I am happy. From what I am hearing here is the updates are not from OnStar. Please advise as to the REAL STORY on the GPS.
First, you must understand that most GM cars don't come with GPS and it's only recently that it's even offered. Especially in comparison to how long OnStar has been in the cars. GM offered OnStar's turn-by-turn guidance as their alternative to in-dash GPS. (Of course at a premium.)
In-dash GPS is a direct competitor to OnStar, even though now the two are linked in a way of being able to send destinations to your in-dash navigation from OnStar.
As for the cost, I believe it's $99 for the map updates from GM which is done through a USB port by the dealer. Over-the-air updates would take a VERY long time to download and would cost GM a lot of money since you don't pay directly for their data connection between the car an OnStar. Also, it's a bad business model for GM.

Did not deal with Mike Furman, don't know him. I worked with a guy named Anthony Dean. Been a few issues already - and I have lost confidence in him for sure.
Curious, do you drink water and watch TV ??? RE: Onstar, I did cancel them. Got a lifetime deal for Sirrus on my Lexus and will take the three year everything deal (fair price) on my C7 in October.

Here is where you order maps for GM vehicles, unless you want to get one that is a year (or more) out of date on Ebay. All 2014 C7s have the most current map (according to this site). I recently got a letter from GM offering a price reduction from $199.00 to $149.00 to update the map in my 2012 Yukon.
i have a 2012 gmc sierra. I had on-star and sirus. I love the radio and if you haggle with them you can get it for 8 bucks a month. The on-star is a complete waste of money. Their cell phone minutes are absolutely ridiculous and don't work all that great. They are correct when they say it will work in areas cell phones don't. I will give them that. I have had onstar for 2 years and finally realized i never use it and its pointless.
My 6 month trial with On Star expired in May. I subscribed to the $10.00 for 6 months calling feature. I didn't notice on my cc bill last month that they had charged me, caught it on this month.
I called OS and had to go thru a song and dance routine. I informed them I did not want it after trial and that I wanted refund. The rep told me they could not reach me so they figured that I wanted it and renewed it for me!
Finally they would cancel it at the end of this billing cycle with no refund. I told them to disconnect now and refund last month and reminded
I did not authorize. They said they would but I will keep an eye on my credit card for refund. BEWARE
Yeah I took my credit card info off a few years ago when they automatically debited my account for a ridiculous amount that I then had reversed. I only pay by check now. Of course that's after the annual phone dance to get a better rate with somebody who barely speaks English. I'm thinking it's a waste anyway after recently having a check engine light issue that they couldn't help me with using their so-called diagnosis feature. Oh but they told me they could give me the phone number for my dealer to make a service appointment.

You would if you'd hang around the forum more. Do a search for him and you'll see why.

Thanks, I have sent Mike Furman an email.
I spend most of my time on the Z06 forum - have two Vettes and the 2001 Z06 is my favorite, but I expect I will be on this forum more often in the future - if I get the 2014 that I ordered.

So what is it. First you say the minutes don't work great and then you say it will work where cell phones don't work. Make up your mind!
What is worse is I bought the minutes - only $5, why not. What they neglected to tell me is that those minutes expire in 6 months. The chances of me needed to use those emergency minutes is near zero over the next few months.
i would not jump to that conclusion. in fact, if you need them, im guessing that they will most likely be of value sooner, rather than later. but, your experience may vary.

I know for a fact that is not true. My wife has sirrus/xm in her cadillac with weather, traffic and map all billed through XM. I asked my salesman yesterday when I picked up my C7 if the GPS was the same as our Cadillac and billed through XM after the 6 month free period, to which he replied yes.
I'm wondering if the salesman gets a piece of the onstar price for everyone he signs up.

I have XM weather, traffic and map on my 2013 Cadillac SRX. The XM subscription will not update the navigation maps. It feeds into the navigation system and gives weather according to your location, traffic warnings along major freeways within about 20 miles of a major metropolitan area, and construction alerts that usually tell me about the construction zones about a quarter mile after passing. I like the weather and traffic purchasing those for less than $7/mo.
If updates to the navigation maps are desired, it must be done inside the vehicle in the USB port. I have not had it long enough to need an update so I do not know if I can do it myself. I do know for a fact the navigation map updates are not done via XM or OnStar.
In defense of the salesman at Criswell, perhaps he was referring to the turn-by-turn directions download from OnStar to your Navigation. That feature works well having used it once in 1 1/2 years. I do subscribe to OnStar Safe & Sound in my Cadillac for $20.95/mo and plan to in my StingRay after the trial period for the security of an automated alert system in the event of an emergency and the improved reception using the OnStar VCIM (built in cell phone) with the vehicle mounted antenna.

OnScam...drove for 40 years without them, don't need them, wouldn't pay them a dime for their useless promises....good luck getting them off your credit card...
Picked up my C7 may 15, courtesy delivery so the delivering dealer did not do the onstar setup. I have not and will not activate it, total waste of money. Tried it on my 2007 chevy and the nav was laughable. The routing was horrible and the recalculating was glacial. Got a Garmin with lifetime upgrades. Get in an accident? Got a cell phone for that. Car gets stolen? Don't want it back. Get locked out? How's that going to happen since the fob never leaves my pocket.

Thank you - this was very helpful. Chriswell Chev told me today they are checking with Chev about this misunderstanding of updating the maps - I guess you could say I have an "uncomfortable" feeling.

Welp i guess i will explain it for you....i have a verizon cell phone which doesnt work at my house as i have no service there....the onstar in my truck did work....When i say they dont work the greatest i mean the call quality is crap if you are on the phone going under an overpass forget it they are gone. Is that a little better ?
