Will it open with the dash button?
(well, open may be the wrong word as it won't really pop open if it isn't already closed all the way but the latch WILL release it. Then you pull it up with your fingers)

There is also a key cylinder above the plate (next to the button). That will work if the electric release fails. So, there are at least 4 ways to open the hatch:

Is it possible that anything was jammed / wedged in the trunk latch? That would explain hard to close and the constant trunk open message. If there is something in the mechanism it may not be latching all the way. It it isn't latching all the way, it would make it appear as if the electronics aren't working but they simply may not be able to move the latch to release the trunk lid. Mechanical (with the key) will be the strongest and able to overcome most binding.
