Corvette Museum now says it won't preserve part of the sinkhole
So, maybe we jumped the gun a bit when reporting that the National Corvette Museum had figured out what the plans were for the sinkhole because now, like a one-to-four skip-shift, they're switching gears.
After reporting here fewer than two weeks ago that they would be partially filling the sinkhole, officials are now saying they will fill the entire thing.

In addition, only three of the 8 Corvettes that went into the sink hole are going to be restored. The others will be displayed as is.

why preserve it at all? that would have been a stupid thing to do.

Because the sink hole has been a significant attraction for the Museum. Attendance has skyrocketed since the sink hole. The NCM Board would have liked to keep part of it as a continued attendance draw. The problem is that the additional cost of preserving part of the sink hole was $1,000,000 and there were numerous other drawbacks including a large retaining wall that would have eliminated the natural look of the sink hole.
Not considering preserving part of what has been responsible for a significant increase in attendance would have been a stupid thing to do.

Seemed that keeping the hole was a good idea for generating revenue.
Placing those cars back in their original positions might still have potential.

While I understand the reasons for having to fill in the sinkhole, it's a little sad to me that the Corvette museum is going to "cover up" a significant event in Corvette history. But it is good that they are going to keep five of the Corvettes as they are. I'm glad I got to see it all in person. It's an overwhelming thing to experience first hand.
