Default Replacement Steering Wheel

Thanks for the tip, forum members. Got a new suede OEM steering wheel from GM. Enough of you piped up about the difficulty of getting the torx bolt off the steering wheel hub that it scared me off doing it myself. The dealer just called to tell me that it's going to take an extra day. They stripped the head trying to get it out.

May I ask how much it's costing to replace?

The new wheel was $300 from GM Partshouse. I'll find out labor $ tomorrow. Hopefully.

OYE!!
Hope it works out, keep us posted.
I was also thinking about that same swap, then the ZO6 wheel came out with the flat bottom....thinking of waiting for that to become available from GM parts....really don't care that it says ZO6...a really nice wheel for less than 1/2 the price for all the custom "D" shaped wheels offered here!

Ive done two wheels now and the bolt needs the proper 1/2 inch to t50 torx from amazon for 8 bucks, and the " jerk" of an impact gun(elec or air) not a hammer driver. Both spun freely immediately.

After a near hernia I can also attest to the need for an impact driver on that bolt.

Update: Took the car to a local Chevrolet dealer to get a professional installation of the steering wheel , here's how it went:. They stripped the head off the torx bolt, then banged up the hub so bad, they had to replace a number of internal parts. They nicked me for all the parts and the time they spent...$300+. It was late Friday and everybody was gone for the day, so I paid for it and drove home. Then I discovered none of the steering wheel buttons worked. Huh? They didn't check THAT? Back to them next Tuesday to try again. Damn.

...sounds like there is some epoxy type adhesive on the threads...this is common in the industry when a joint is too shallow for a longer bolt to achieve proper tension. Also/or, a Torx drive fastener is the wrong drive system for this application...it should be a hex head so that much higher torsional loads are applied using a standard wrench. You cannot get to those high torques with a Torx bit...it will cam out....was never intended for high tension joints, although EXTERNAL Torx can take a lot more than internal as the features shown below make obvious....

It doesn't seem right that you have to pay for parts they messed up.
