That does raise the question as to how they got to the LT4 from the LT1. What happened to 2 and 3? Or are they "reserved for future content" so to speak?
Old motor designations revived. The small-block V-8, dubbed the LT series, first appeared in the Corvette in 1992. It featured aluminum heads, electronic controls and a reverse-flow cooling system that cooled the heads before the rest of the engine to give it more fuel efficiency and a longer life than the older small-block V-8 versions. The LT1 generated 260 to 300 horsepower. No LT2 or LT3 engines were produced. The LT4 was GM's high-performance engine offering 330 horsepower. The 5.7-liter all-aluminum LT5 was developed for Corvette, according to Superchevy.com.

LT1 and LT4 pay homage to previous generation LT1 and LT4 engines. There are no historical LT2 or LT3.
Depending on what the CTS-V gets, it may be have a different designation like the previous LSA. Hard to say what GM has up their sleeves, but if the C7 is a shorter run, then we may just see the LT1 and LT4 this round.

Same way they jumped around with the LS series in the Corvette C5/C6.

with the weight, blower, 8L trans etc, I'm guessing you'll see a detuned LT4 variant... LTA maybe? One thing is for sure, I will certainly be first in line. I absolutely LOVE my CTS V!

LT series first came in 71 with the 370 HP LT1. The 92 engine was a new redesign that ended the original SBC run as the Chevy engine. Not that good of an engine and was more of a stop gap between the SBC and the LS series.

Tom...
And don't forget that the LT5 designation was also used in 1978 as a "Engine Performance Pkg-High Alt."
