500 mile (all highway) round trip in a 2014 Corvette Stingray convertible with the 6 speed automatic, set on "Economy Mode". Average speed was 75-78mph, driven fairly passively (for a Corvette...)
Oh, and while at a rest stop, some guy walked up and asked me how I liked my Ferrari...
That is exactly the mileage I got on a trip to Abilene with the transmission in 6th and cruise control.... Did not even have to go to eco mode, or 7th.
Nope, the difference is the manual drops from 8 cyl to 4 cyl ONLY in eco mode. The auto will drop to 4cyl in eco and tour mode at least (I have not tested it in sport or track).
Hey, don't ask me, I didn't design the thing (great mileage though)...

I noticed that mine drops to 4 cyl in tour mode as well... so what is the difference between tour and eco mode in an automatic?

Gotcha, thanks for the clarification (all this time I knew about AFM not being "directly" selectable in the A6 but didn't realize there was an ECO mode otherwise)

That, my friend is the $64,000.00 question. Maybe one of the "techies" on the board can explain? While they are at it, maybe they can explain my other observation, which is when I started the trip, the car was in "T" (Tour) mode. About an hour after I got on the interstate, I glanced at the DIC and the car was now in "E" (Eco) mode. I definitely did not manually switch the modes but they had apparently changed on their own. My hypothesis is that maybe the car senses a long stretch of constant highway speeds and makes the switch for the driver from Tour to Eco?
I was thinking that maybe I should have corrected him and told him it was actually a Bricklin, but I am not sure he would have been old enough to get the joke...

Anyway, just a hypothesis...
Surely it will at least stay in the mode you put it in, but as you say, the automatics can go to 4 cylinder mode from several settings, unlike the manual transmission cars.
