I also get a yellow glow on the tach when it shouldn't. Here's the scenario I found with my car, which is a 2015 A8 Z51, in case it matters:
- Set the tach to sport mode
- Put the transmission in manual mode
- Make sure the car is warmed up (and not in break-in mode), this means that the only colors on that tach is the red section starting at 6500
- In first gear, rev to 4000+ rpm
The tach will glow yellow, as if you are in a yellow warning band, but you are not.
It only seems to do this in first gear, other gears work as I would expect.
So the the real question is if this is intentional for some reason or a software bug.
Hate to bump an older thread but I noticed this with this '16 A8 as well, only is 1st gear. Not sure if its only manual mode, could be, but the yellow halo on the sport tach comes on at 3500-4000rpm. Turns orange than red as RPMs climb. 2nd gear and up it turns yellow around 5500rpm. This is with the car fully warmed up and over 500 miles on it.
I searched around and seen it mentioned a few times but havent found an explanation. I thought maybe it was tire temp but it shows 'warm' so thats not it.
Has to be some reason why only in 1st, its possible its just an early warning since it revs so quick in 1st. Its just a light and doesnt do anything. I dont remember my '14 A6 doing it and not sure if it happens with M7 cars in 1st.

2015 Z51 M7. Noticed the same thing today. Car was fully warmed up - driven about 15 miles - got the yellow glow @4000 RPM in 1st. Been wondering about it off and on all day.
I suspect it's programmed this way to give you more warning you're approaching redline. In first gear, with the pedal floored, revs climb really quickly, so there really isn't much time between 4,000 rpm and redline. If they waited to flash the yellow until you were just below redline you wouldn't have time to react before the rev limiter cut in.

Thats what I figured but in manual mode if you rev up slow in first and the yellow comes on at 3500rpm it attracts your attention. I dont remember the '14 A6 doing it but it may have. I havent tried it in D where it shifted up that high yet, it may just do it manual mode.
To be fair the track HUD/dash just turns on the first pair of shift dots at that same point so it doesnt draw that much attention.
The only time I ever saw anything light up like that was when it said "performance shift active" on a hard acceleration and it had a yellow/gold glow around the speedo head.

2015 Z51 I confirm it does it with the Manual m7, is this because I rev past 3500 not sure
