Default A6 Question

My cars is a 2014 Z51 Automatic (A6). When setting at a red light in sports mode, if I pull the shifter back into the manual mode, it is always in 2nd gear not 1st. When in "D" it only displays "D" on the dash screen so you don't really know what gear you are in, but in 'M" it shows what gear it's using. My question is, does the A6 only use 1st gear when in manual mode and only if you force it to? I wish the dash would display what gear the A6 is using when in "D" and you are cruising around.

Good question/I was also wondering if the A6 uses 1st gear, when it's in drive. I've tried to count, as it goes thru the gears, but it seems so smooth, it's hard to tell. My Silverado Duramax/Allison 6 speed, starts out in 1st gear, but it's a heavy duty truck.

If you are stopped and ready to pull out just drop it into manual and see what gear it's in. On my car it is always 2nd. Once in manual I then have to click the down shift button to use 1st.

You can also just shift while in D; no need to place the shifter in M.

"When the shift lever is in D (Drive),
press either the right (+) plus paddle or the left (−) minus paddle to place the transmission in Manual Paddle Shift mode. The gear indicator by
the shift lever, in the cluster, and in the HUD will display an M, even though the shift lever is still in
D (Drive). To exit the system, hold
the (+) plus paddle for more than one second. The system will return to automatic shifting after 6 seconds
of cruising at a steady speed, no manual shifts, no aggressive cornering, or when the vehicle comes to a stop."

In D mode it does go to 1st gear. In M mode you have to manually put it into 1st.
