Default Shift Paddle Question

My Mazda had a gate--you slid the shifter to the left and then pushed forward to downshift and pulled back to up shift. Once you put it in a gear it wouldn't shift unless you slid the shifter back to the right.

Once you stop using the paddle shifters, how does the A8 know its time to auto shift again?

The Manual Paddle Shift system
can be deactivated by moving the
shift lever from M(Manual Mode)
back to D (Drive).
When the shift lever is in D (Drive),
press either the right (+) plus paddle
or the left (−) minus paddle to place
the transmission in Manual Paddle
Shift mode. The gear indicator by
the shift lever, in the cluster, and in
the HUD will display an M, even
though the shift lever is still in
D (Drive). To exit the system, hold
the (+) plus paddle for more than
one second. The system will return
to automatic shifting after 6 seconds
of cruising at a steady speed, no
manual shifts, no aggressive
cornering, or when the vehicle
comes to a stop.
While the Manual Paddle Shift gear
selection system is active, the
transmission will automatically
downshift through the gears as the
vehicle slows. The transmission will
select 2 (Second) gear as the
vehicle stops.

There's a manual mode that you shift into the use the paddles to shift up and down. If you leave it in the normal D mode you can use the paddles to down shift but after awhile the computer will take over again. I think it takes over again after your done passing another car or finished with your aggressive driving.

My C6 with the 6A would shift down to 2nd when stopped ( assume the 2014 C7 with the A6 does the same). However, my 2015 C7 with the A8 goes all the way down to 1st when I come to a stop. This is when in Manual shift mode in both cases.

2014 will only go to 2 when you come to a complete stop in M. If you want to go to 1st, you will have to downshift.
