Default 16 year old crashes Vette...

http://www.khou.com/story/news/local...dent/19377131/

Just saw news tonight about a 16 year old crashed his Vette, killing 15 year old passenger...

Who would let their 16 y.o. kid drive a Vette in the rain/wet roads?
I thought 16 y.o. can't have other minors (besides siblings) as passengers?

It has nothing to do with a vette. Probably just poor judgement.
Maybe just like Paul Walker and his buddy out in California

Young people do this a lot. Where I live a young man and his girlfriend drove around the barrier at a railroad crossing and got hit by the train. Doesn't matter what your driving when you die of poor judgement.

This is good to be posted once in a while, because even those of us older than 16 drive like a$$es sometimes and need reality sometimes. Sad to read, but reminds us to think when in our own vettes...

What's curious is how did the kid die if he was wearing a seatbelt. Was it a convertible or hardtop? What made the passenger so vulnerable? Is it typical to get killed when a Corvette rolls?

Seriously? You can't be serious with these questions.

If we are all honest I think we can recall driving like an a-hole as a 16 year old.. We just got away with it. Even as adults we have moments in these vehicles where the 16 year old bubbles out.

Corvettes as you have may have heard are a bargain because you get your car and coffin in one place. They never have and never will be good in crashes relative to bigger vehicles. It is just physics.

We talk about mandatory trips to Fellows schools etc to learn what our cars can do, which is a great idea to respect the power these cars have.

What perhaps may work well hand in hand would be a trip to a website like reddit once and awhile to take a little peek at graphic car crash scenes and videos of stunt driving with fatalities. I for one, definitely have a fresh respect for these vehicles and how lucky we are after looking at some of these things.

Perhaps as well, these cautionary stories may slow down other kids or prevent dads from allowing these vehicles to be driven when the potential to show off in front of a girl is irresistible .

Driving with dad in the passenger seat is much safer than a young Kate Upton.

We all have made and will make poor judgments. It isn't time to bash the parents that allowed their son to experience a vette. It is time to pray for the kid that made it, his family and the family that lost their child. Anyone can be a basher, however now is not the time for it. Just my .02.

If the parents are members of the forum, you have my condolences and prayers.

dvilin,

Seriously? You can't be serious with these questions.
And what's wrong with the question? Wearing a seatbelt when flipping a car is not that big a deal unless you're driving something like a Ford Expedition or a soft top with no roll bars. Or unless you may be doing 100+ mph. People are in serious accidents all the time and seatbelts frequently save them. Maybe not always but I bet if I flipped my vet wearing a seatbelt I would likley survive.

Didn’t look at the link, not interested in viewing a situation others thought ugly.

Yes, I suspect all of us have done things that in retrospect we wouldn’t have done had we thought about it. But...I seriously doubt the car was HIS and I think a parent who lets a 16 yr old take a 190 mph car out on his own is exhibiting a very serious lack of judgement. Don

I stand corrected, I assumed (often a mistake) that the Vette was a C7. Still view this as an unfortunate lack of judgement by the parents.

I don't believe the tone of my post is "bashing the parents", it is meant to be a call to use this tragedy to learn from it and examine perhaps some of our behaviors behind the wheel.

The parents will already have an eternity of regret.

Did you all see the 5 folks going on vacation to Florida from Texas I believe who got killed this week?????

Family traveling.......16 y/o driving at 11PM and fell asleep!!!!

What's crazier.........allowing a young person a corvette or allowing a new driver to haul the family on vacation through the night?

And the only one wearing a seatbelt was the kid driving who survived....how can any responsible parent allow their kids to ride in a car without seatbelts?

I'm sorry, I think you may have taken my post wrong. I was agreeing with you that we have all driven incorrectly at times and are lucky to have gotten through it.

I was referring to those that didn't think a 16 year old should be driving a vette.

In certain parts of the country it's not uncommon for young kids to be driving nice cars.
