Default Time estimate: order to build

Assuming a dealer has an allocation and there aren't any constraints with an order........how long can I expect to wait.

I'm trying to target an order date.

I live in western New York State and would not want to take delivery until late April.

Thanks for your help.

it depends on what you mean by the dealer has an allocation. A dealer can have x amounts of allocations but they may not come up every month. It may take them 2 or 3 months to get that allocation called. My dealer had allocations but wasn't called until my order was 2 and a half months old. I received my car exactly 4 months after i ordered. Some dealers get allocations every week.

Part of the problem is GM uses the word "allocation" in two different contexts. First, at the beginning of the model year, or the start up of a new model like the Z06, GM tells the dealer approximately how many of that car they can expect, and this is called the dealer's allocation. If the dealer has sold less than that number, they can honestly say they have allocation available.

However, every two weeks or so, GM has a consensus cycle, where they assign production slots for a production period 4-6 weeks down the road. These slots will also specify what option constraints apply to each dealer. Unfortunately, these slots are also known as allocations. Now, if a dealer has a small number of expected cars for the year, say less than 20, they will not get a slot on every consensus cycle, as GM spreads them out through the year. As mentioned above, some dealers only get an allocation every other month or so (which kinda makes sense if the yearly total is only 5 or 6 cars.) therefore, your dealer may have yearly allocation left, but be unable to get your order immediately assigned to a production slot. Or, when a slot becomes available, it may not allow your order to be matched with it, if some of your options are constrained (limited to a certain percentage of production.)

Hope this info helps you get a handle on the process.

Assuming your order is accepted by GM as soon as your dealer places it, it should be 6-8 weeks. The delays occur when the dealer doesn't have an allocation in hand for what you want the day the order is placed. That's the variable you can't control. As fdxpilot stated above, only your dealer knows for sure and sometimes they aren't forthcoming with information or because of GM's procedures what they say isn't exactly clear.

Thanks to all for the info.
Looks like I should plan on 8 weeks and act accordingly.
I haven't talked with any dealers yet, but have a few in mind.

Much appreciated

Be sure to ask about their allocations and when are they available. Go with a high volume dealer. Good Luck!

I'd say 10 or 11 weeks. Ordered 11/23, built 1/13, it's on the train to the west coast now. Should be delivered within two weeks so I'd say about 11 total. Hopefully less!

GM uses the phrase "guide number" before the beginning of the vehicle line model year just before the computer will accept orders to tell dealers how many units they can expect to get. Some dealers call that "allocation" which makes following the process somewhat difficult.

I personally do not believe this error is by intent but more because the staff do not fully understand how the process works.

Three weeks from 2000 to 3800 can happen but is quick; four or five weeks is closer to norm. These time frames exclude the two week winter break when no North American GM assembly plants are building. They will ship what has been built during that time but not build.

Varies every year but starts before XMas Eve Day and continues at least thru New Year's Day. This year it included the day after New Year's Day.

This year was different to some extent. B/G was suppose to shut down on the 19th of Dec. till 2nd of Jan. Open on the 6th. But just before the 19th B/G decided to work till the 24th.

Like I posted: it depends. But what I posted is a good guideline if you have the same question in the future.

Another thing to remember: these status changes are not carved in stone, and exist only to meet internal factory to corporate needs. They were never designed to meet any other need whatsoever. Dealers had access but more as an accident not as a method to improve anything whatsoever.

By anything, I mean anything.

But tracking the status changes for your own order has to be one of the best eticket rides an adult can experience and because it is, it can be addictive. Just note how many forum members have experienced this roller coaster ride.
