Is there a C7 music guru out there who can help me maximize my mp3 song files or point me to some tips and tricks thread? I copied as-is (unmodified filenames) 4211 songs from my computer to a 32GB USB stick - about 18gigs worth. I put the stick in the console USB port. I received a curt voice stating the indexing is progressing and "she" would advise when done. Once done, a message in the DIC said the song limit has been exceeded. Not a lot of information after that.
Poking around the interweb I get different info about songs files, file structure and folder level depth. The manual tells me that folders can be nested to 11 levels. That does not do me a lot of good if I do not know other limits. Example: can I make n number of folders max?
I am guessing that the index list can only handle about 1000 songs - so my other 3211 songs are not selectable unless I do some fancy footwork. I am thinking I need to work purely with playlists with each list comprising no more than n number of songs. I just do not know.
Is there a primer out there on how to efficiently set up my media library so that with very few commands, I may access my 4211 songs?
Thanks in advance.
I have to do something productive with my C7 while I wait out the weather here in the Great White North
I am by no means a music guru. What I did was to get a 256GB SD card and reformat to fat 32. Gave me all i needed
Thanks bluedevil. Yes, my USB stick is FAT32, so no probs there. But from the C7 system, I have no indication whether or not 4211 songs are present. Thumbing through scroll down song list would be a pain; but I am confident not all songs are listed. I tried the voice method but "she" could not locate a song I requested. Looking for Fishin' in the Dark by Nitty Gritty Band was not in the list of "F" songs even though it is physically loaded on the stick. Lastly, other than thumbing through, I have no idea which of the 4211 songs did get indexed. I have no idea how the indexing algorithm works. Does it load by file date, by filename or merely by the order they were physically placed on the stick during the copy process.
The 4211 songs are just a test. I would like to place my entire song library, about 90 gigs (~17,000 tunes) onto an SD card.
This whole experiment is to figure out if I need to massage filenames or titles because of disallowed characters, arrange in some folder structure format or obey whatever rules required to get to my music.
Do you have just song titles or is it an album folder with x number of song titles?.
I have a 16GB thumb drive with about 14GB on it, not sure how many songs in total.
However mine are in folders (album artist name).
I probably have about 1500 song titles since my MP3 is at the highest level (320).
I did a quick count of about 120 folders and sub folders with an avarage of 12 to 15 songs per album.
I do not have any where near the 4200 plus song titles as you have.
Not sure if this helps, but at least can give you an idea of my structure.
I have it hooked up to the USB in the compartment behind the infosystem screen.
I have 83 (album) folders, 1570 files for 9.3 gb with no issues or error messages on my '14 using a 32 gb SD card. The infotainment manual says the system is optimized to support 2 devices with a total of 100,000 songs. FAT32 works, you can search for some threads that list what other formats may work. You are using the SD card slot in the console? The '15s have an SD slot in the glove box for PDR.

So - not sure why you are having problems!
Good Luck!

Thanks Ron. I did see he mention of 100K songs in the manual. The manual also says the NTFS file method works as well but left my stick with the FAT32 format. I do know the SD slot for the PDR is in the glovebox - card already installed and working fine. I have not tried an SD card in the armrest slot yet though.
It looks like I will have to "chunk" my songs via some kind of folder structure. I will do more research on the greater internet for ideas. I am thinking that the anticipated use is to never "Play Song" solely from a max list of songs. Rather, the system will work if you drill down through folders - something like Select Genre->Select Artist->Play Song. I will experiment with Playlists since I would prefer to play a mix of music genres and artists. I suspect that once you do a "Select" some further indexing occurs. Select again and even further indexing occurs until you get to a very short list of songs. Example here could be Select Genre (Rock)-> Select Artist (The Doors)-> Select Album (Waiting for the Sun)-> Play Song (Spanish Caravan).
To get what I want, I may be able set up assorted playlists (none with more than 1000 songs) and then Play Song.
Get an Ipad touch - it has its own database and passes that info to the stereo - and then you can bypass any limits... I do not have a c7 but I have a kenwood that slows down with too many songs in one folder. Otherwise you will need some software to catalog your songs into sub folders.
I use a 64gb USB with about 40 gb of music on it. Reformatted to FAT files though. Works fine. Nothing I have is nested more than 3 deep. I don't use play lists because I have a lot of music ripped from internet radio stations which have no commercials or very few and go for hours and hours. I do have a lot of albums and some custom mixed folders.
If you look at your album list, is there an "UNKNOWN" album listed? If there is and you select it, do you see gobs of songs that are supposed to be in other albums? This is the problem I am having and it prevents me from finding and selecting songs. I am still trying to find a solution.

I have a 32 GB USB drive with 2065 songs on it and have no problems. I just purchased a 64 GB drive and tried to use it and it didn't work. I am reformatting it from ExFat to Fat32 as I write this. I had to do the same thing with the 64 GB SD card I use with the PDR Camera.

Hi Bob
I had issues with 64GB SD card too. The car didn't like ExFAT so I tried NTFS. The software was really labouring trying to process 15,000 songs. I ended up back with a 32 gig card and for now, just over 4000 tunes all in mp3 format.
I noticed a couple of things with the 4000+ quantity. The voice recognition does not like any single entity (song, artist, genre) over 4000. It just says it can't do it.
I have my fastest memory recall if I just have the single root folder holding all 4000+ songs. It takes a long time to catalog but once done, the recall is quick enough for me. I had to abandon the subfolder route.
One caveat is when you turn off your C7. If you immediately turn it back on again, I get a no media found message. I do have to do a song and dance to get it to work. If you change from radio or XM to your media, you 'may' get a no media message. Just wait it out. The system it just getting its bearings. It will say no media found and yet it will begin playing where it left off.
Finally, I use playlists to mimic the folders when I want a custom group of tunes.
