C7 manual transmission.
TR6060 (2008+ C6 and now C7) is equipped with a reverse lockout solenoid. All gears are synchronized, including reverse gear. But regardless, the engine must be running and car stopped before one can shift to reverse. When engine is off (or vehicle is moving), please do not try to shift in reverse. It is not a good practice to shift gears while engine is not running anyway. However forcing shifter to reverse when engine is off will cause damage to transmission. If you shutdown engine and forgot to put in gear, try first gear.

Pardon my limited mechanical knowledge, but could you elaborate as to how shifting gears with the engine off is detrimental? I figure any time metal has to move, wear will occur, but if you could go into greater detail, that would be great.
The kid within me likes to shift gears while I am parked with the engine off, like when I am waiting for someone. Don't worry, I am only engaging in this "awful" behavior in an Audi A4; not a Corvette.

You know I was wondering about that. So theres no way to accidentally shift the car in reverse if your driving normally right? I went from the A6 C6 to an M7 Z06 and boy thats a lot of gears and was worried that I would F it up if I accidentally went into reverse...
I was driving down the freeway at speed a couple of years ago in my 02 Formula (M6, T56 tranny) and for some crazy reason slapped it right into reverse at about 65mph. The tranny went right into gear without so much as a bit of hesitation. The motor also instantly died. I safely pulled off the road, slipped it into neutral, cleaned my soiled pants, and reached for the key. Car started right up like no one's business. Then I drove off. I've never done that with any other car after driving manual shift cars for 40 years.
Not sure if that is unique, and would never intentionally try it again, but I am wondering if our C7s would behave similarly. Any ideas?
Parking (Manual
Transmission)
Before exiting the vehicle, move the
shift lever into 1 (First) or
R (Reverse), and apply the parking
brake. Once the shift lever has been
placed into 1 (First) or R (Reverse)
with the clutch pedal pressed in,
turn the ignition off and release the
clutch.
