After reading all the problems guys were having,I know from experience that if I Start getting mad I might end up taking A hammer to it.I hired A professional.2 hours and my shifter was changed.I have more money than patience.
The shifter boot pops right up without having to take the console apart. It just snaps into place from the top.
You just need to grab it in the middle on both sides. Push your fingers down on the leather/suede and curl your fingertip up.
Snap, snap and it's off. Look here at the tabs. Seriously, it takes like 5 seconds.
The shifter **** comes off in less than a minute. It takes longer to find the torx screw in your toolbox.
Grab the plastic chrome ring, pull up while turning counter-clockwise. Push down to expose the torx screw on the side.
Once that is out, it lifts right off. No other tools are required.
Took about 10 minutes to go from this:
To this:
Be careful not to turn it too far either direction - taking it off or putting back on.
The plastic tabs break very easily. It is not metal. It is only plastic chrome.
I hope it's as easy as you describe! I will give it a try and knowing that the center counsel doesn't have to come off makes it that much easier. The shift boot, has very little instructions for installation.

What is the difference between the two pics? Same shift **** but different leather boot?

My car is a Z51 with competition seat with micro inserts. With that, it had a fuzzy wheel, shift and boot.
I replaced the wheel with custom D top and bottom and replaced both shifter and boot with leather.
The one thing I found if not previously mentioned above or elsewhere (and, it wasn't when I did mine) is that the screw has thread-locker of some sort and the last thing I wished to do was have to drill it out because I'd damaged it in the process. So, I took an electric soldering gun and heated just the screw and it came right out.
All the best, and the one best mod I've made to my '18. It now has the same **** all my other cars have and have had for the last 25+ years. Feels sooooo good... ahhhhh!
