Does anyone know why GM allows me to open my convertible top with the remote, but not close it with the remote. Is this a safety feature? Can it be overcome?

That's what I was told, safety. I don't normally want to override safety issues, but I this case, I'd do it.
Since the fob forces you to be in visual distance, I'm not sure I understand why closing would be more a safety issue than opening. Someone could get their arm crunched as the top opens just as easily as when it closes.
But, since I generally will want to raise the windows after the top, having to do it from inside the car doesn't really bother me. What I wish I could do is lower or raise the top without having to hold the button.
If you were allowed to put the convertible top up remotely, say from you house and then you got distracted, you may forget to latch the top to the windshield header panel. Several coupe guys have experience "flying roof panels" due to similar circumstances.

It's a hot day and your vette has sat in the sun baking. Would you not say that as you walk from your office to the parking lot that it is great to be able to lower the top from a distance allowing that hot air to quickly escape. Brilliant

I understand why they don't let you fool with the top on the OnStar app, but with the remote you have to be within straight visual sight and no interruption of the signal to put it down, so I don't know why they don't allow it to be put up remotely. I think the chance of squashing a child in the mechanism is pretty darn slim if you have to be able to see the car to operate it.
