To make it easier to get out without stepping on them. They also have the style that goes straight front to back if you don't like the contour version.
I've got the racing side skirts that go straight across. I love the look-never had a problem getting in and out of the car because of them.
The Z06 has "tuck-in" side skirts since it's rear fenders are several inches wider than the standard C7. I have no problem getting out of the car with straight side skirts. I will tell a new passenger who may not understand how to get out of a Vette to watch for the skirts.
If you look at where GM puts the protective plastic, that is where I had a lot of marks occurring from pebbles and sand. It is from the center of the door back. My side skirts have stopped all issues with "stuff' hitting the car. I like the idea of having as much protection as I can. In fact I removed the plastic as it was looking bad. Have had my skirts over 6 months and no marks on the car.
Jake,
Where did you order the side skirts and splitter and did they come painted carbon flash or did you have to custom paint? Also, which model did you get, there are so many variations.

Looks great!
I assume you just used a heat gun or hair dryer to heat and remove the factory (yellowing on mine) protection film? Any major residue left behind?

I did not use a heat gun but waited for a warm day. There is a trick to getting most of the adhesive off without a residue. You must pull at 90 degrees NOT a low angle. In one spot I did use a low angle because I moved to far when sitting on the ground! Spent more time (20 minutes) getting the adhesive off that small section as I did all the other areas! Didn't make the same mistake on side two and it mostly all came off. Here is a PDF of what I did with the 3M adhesive remover I used etc: http://netwelding.com/Rocker_Panel_Film.pdf
BTW, side skirts are becoming so hot these days, I saw an F-Type in a Jaguar showroom with one. Even Hyundais, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus cars have rocker panel accents and shape that give off the impression or a side skirt.
Anyone make straight/flat side skirts in the same material as the level 1 Z06 front lip? I'd like to get some skirts for protection purposes more so than looks, so would rather spend less seeing as they'll get damaged/chipped anyway compared to the $1k set of carbon fiber ones.

Car looks great. Was it easy to pull off the plastic? I'm tempted to do this but haven't because I thought the paint could be damaged.
