Default Oil Pressure Concerns

New owner (First Vet)
  • 2014 Stingray Base Coupe
  • Manual
  • 27,363 miles

Noticed the last couple of start-ups first thing in the morning, the sound of engine valves tapping but oil level is good. The tapping noise dissipates after a few minutes of driving. I have also noticed oil pressure @ 27 lbs during idle. While idling, oil pressure will rise to about 35 lbs and then drop back to 27 lbs. again. Is this normal?

30 psi at idle isn't a problem. Can't comment on the noise without hearing it. It's under warranty though so get it checked by a dealer.

Yea a video of the tapping would be helpful. Oil level is good? Are you sure it's not just the direct injection system making all the noise it does right at start up.

You could be right. I'll get it checked out just to be sure. I'm just concerned about the oil pressure fluctuation when idleling in conjunction w/ the noise.

My oil pressure bounces around some as well when it's warming up. I wouldn't worry too much about that.

Do an advanced search on this forum (C-7 General Discussion) about tapping noise at warm up. Has been discussed many times. After you review these threads you can make your decision.

This is the first engine I've seen that has the engine computer controlling the oil pressure. It's no longer the constant pressure as in other engines.

I was also a little thrown by the voltage regulator being controlled by computer, as voltage on the C7 varies a lot depending on need and engine load.

I hope this is normal as my 2014 Z51 M7 oil pressure does always fluctuate when starting up from cold. I see the oil pressure needle jumping up and down few times and then it stabilizes when the engine warms up. I am not hearing any funny noises tho.

My oil pressure does not fluctuate at all at idle.

I just bought a new 15 that now has 200 miles on it, and I see it does the same thing at start up.
