Today, for the first and only time, on cold startup after sitting in the garage all night, but on a very hot day (98+). Anybody have any clues as to what would cause this and if I should worry about it?
I'm not a mechanical expert so I figured I'd ask the professionals!

Yes, I noticed on occasion when it is first started in the morning a loud bark, don't believe it's truly a back fire, I think it's leftover fuel in the cats detonating, only happens on first start up.
Mine doesn't "bark" at startup but will pop out of the exhaust when revving at a stop and once in a while during WOT. Anybody else have this issue? '15 base coupe A8 NPP

Mine does the exact same thing. 15 convertible A8 NPP

You are probably hearing the inline flame arrestor at work. Normal situation. Enjoy the bark.
I'm will start off with a bark sometimes also.....I believe it's the computer turning over the motor and not adding spark until it sees oil pressure. The "Bark" is the excess fuel built up in the cylinders.

My theory is the same except that I suspect fuel pressure, the slow bleed of which has previously been explained as long crank-before-start times during the first start of the day. I'd accept either theory as reasonable.
It doesn't make sense to delay ignition (spark) until the oil pressure is up. It would be better to delay fuel injection. The last thing you want is unburned fuel washing down the cylinder walls.
Back years ago we would turn ignition on and off several times to get that noise. It has been known to blow the muffler clean off those old cars!
Yep. Remember the "key bang" very well. Ruined lots of mufflers back in the day. The "pop" occurs with my car every morning start when the engine is cold. Has done it since day one. I love it. Lets the neighbors know I am going for a ride.
