That is indeed correct. Manual shift mode prevents the car from going into V4 mode.

Just tested AFM on the way to the store in my M7 for the heck of it.
No luck in the first 3 gears. AFM starts working at around 23 MPH in 4th, although once in AFM you can decel close to 20 mph before it goes back to V8 mode.

Thanks for all the comments. I'm still wondering if the 2016 A8 only engages AFM in ECO mode?
Previously the only official way to defeat AFM was to have the transmission in manual mode.
Someone with a 2016 A8 please test this.

We won't know for sure until someone with a 2016 A8 reports back, but I'd be very, very surprised if GM changes the way it works. It would reduce the official EPA mpg rating, which I don't see GM doing for any reason.

Well I just read the owner's manual and it clearly states that the A8 has NOT changed.
Oh well I'll just keep it in M when I want to avoid AFM.

The 2016 Owners Manual (posted in another thread) has this to say:
Bottom line: no change from 2015/2015.
Active Fuel Management®
This system allows the engine to
operate on either all or half of its
cylinders, depending on the driving
conditions. With a manual
transmission, the system is only
active in Eco mode. With an
automatic transmission, the system
is available in all modes, but is more
aggressive in Eco mode. See Driver
Mode Control > 195.

It wouldn't lower the EPA rating as they didn't use Eco mode for that rating. They used Tour.

Active Fuel Management (engine
cylinder shuts off)
4-Cylinder Mode
. Normal with automatic
transmission: The engine uses
8-cylinder mode when
accelerating, but changes to
4-cylinder mode when coasting.
. With manual transmission:
Active Fuel Management only
active in Eco mode.
. Off in Manual mode with
automatic transmission unless in
Eco mode.
. Eco keeps the engine in
4-cylinder mode unless heavy
acceleration is needed.

Which is precisely why AFM is active in Tour. The purpose of AFM is to improve fuel mileage. If AFM is not active in Tour, why would Chevrolet add the expense of AFM to Corvette engines.

AFM works great and is unobtrusive IMHO. No idea why so many are polarized against it. On our trip back from Museum delivery (4300 miles), I had to watch the indicator to know when it was active. Mileage was pretty amazing, and performance was there when I wanted it.

For me, it's a squeak that my car has developed when switching from V4 to V8 mode. Plus, I just like the sound of V8 mode on all the time. I would like the ability to have this without going into manual mode. But if that is the way...so be it. But would be nice to have a flash from GM that would at least disable it in track and sport mode. The only other option is a tuner which voids warranty. I figure if I am going that route, I might as well go big mods and void pretty much everything. But right now I like using it as a daily driver so not ready to do that yet.

It is unobtrusive if you don't have NPP (Performance Exhaust) set to Track mode all the time (ie maximum volume.) If you do have NPP set to maximum volume, then you really notice it when AFM kicks in and quiets down your exhaust. THIS is what polarizes people against it. These folks like their muscle car to sounds like it all the time.

Thanks for the explanation. Ours also has NPP, and I usually run it in Track mode myself. However, I usually also have music going, so it is not such an audible change.
The performance is amazing and it kicks in and out seamlessly, which is the important aspect to me.
To each their own. I'm glad they have it.

HP Tuners does not have tables yet that show the different modes. If they did it could be changed to Eco only operation on the Automatics.
